    What is Telnet?

Telnet is a protocol created to help connect and manage computers remotely. Empyrion allows the ability for a user to connect to and manage their server using telnet.

How do I even use telnet?

There are two ways to use telnet:

    • Through the Command Line (Must be enabled on your computer through Programs and Features. For windows, please view this guide on how to enable it for Windows 7/8.1/10 here.
    • Through a GUI-based (Graphical User Interface) client, like Putty.

(Download the Putty.exe or the puttytel.exe.)

    Locating the Telnet Port Number

Telnet uses a different port number to log into your server. To find this port number, first:

    • Navigate to your Filebrowser within your Web Interface (Left-side panel, click “Tools>Filebrowser”).
    • Click the “empyrion” folder and then click, “dedicated.yaml”
    • Your file should display your server name, the port to connect to your telnet and your telnet password. We want just the port and password:

    Using the Command Line

Open your command line (Windows+R and type in “cmd”), and simply type in “telnet” which will change your command line to look similar to this:

    Telnetcmd.png

Type in, “open(or type in the letter o) Your servers IP address Your Telnet Port Number ” like so:

Press enter and a password prompt will appear. Enter your password and you should have successfully logged into your Empyrion server using Telnet!

    Using a GUI like Putty

Using Telnet with Empyrion is important for the administration of the server. This allows access to the server to complete tasks from talking to players to banning players. Telnet gives the power of remote administration. You will need to download this first.

    • Now that you have PuTTY we will need to activate it on our server. Navigate to your web interface and go to the general settings page.
    • Here we will check the box to enable telnet and then save the changes then restart your server.
    • After a restart of the server, we now need to login via telnet using PuTTY.
    • Next, you will need to go to your file browser. Click Empyrion and scroll down to click “Dedicated.yaml”
    • Here you will find the Telnet port number. You will need:
    • the IP address of your server,
    • the Telnet Port
    • the Telnet Password in order to connect with PuTTY.
    • open putty and enter the information to connect. We will start by setting the socket type to “Raw”.
    • Enter your Server IP address and the Telnet port number. Now click “Open”

The console will appear and you will be prompted for the password. Enter the password as shown in your General Settings and you will then be logged in. You can now add and alter admins.

    Commands with Telnet

Typing in “help” will display a list of commands you can use to control your server. Some highlights:

    • “Say” will allow you to put text into the global chat for your server
    • “ban” where you can ban a user from the server directly

Please view the help command’s output to see all the commands you may use for telnet.
