How To Connect to a Minecraft Server?

Understanding how to join a Minecraft server is important, especially when hosting your own server. The process is different for both Java & Bedrock Edition, but relatively the same. Whether you use the direct connection option or add the server to your list, the process is straightforward. With this in mind, we’ve created this Nitrado guide to show you how to connect to your Minecraft server 👏

Finding Your Server Address

Before connecting, you need to locate your server’s unique address. Follow these simple steps:

1. Log into your Nitrado Web Interface for your Minecraft server.
2. Head towards the Dashboard – look for the IP near the top or top left of your screen.
3. You should see something like “5.83.164.38:11190”. If so, copy and save it.

Joining Your Server on Java Edition

Minecraft: Java Edition provides two methods to connect to a server: direct connection or adding a server. The first one is primarily an alternative way, but can be useful for testing IPs. Review each section below to learn more about both methods.

Direct Connection

1. Launch Minecraft, click Multiplayer, and select Direct Connection.
   
2. Enter the IP you saved / copied from the Nitrado Web Interface.
   
3. Click Join Server and wait until you load in the world!

Adding a Server to Your List

1. Launch Minecraft, then click the Add Server button.
   
2. Enter the IP you saved / copied from the Nitrado Web Interface.
3. Additionally, enter a Server Name. Click Done when you’re finished.
   
4. Select the server from your server list, then click Join Server.

Joining Your Server on Bedrock Edition

Similar to Java, Minecraft: Bedrock Edition requires you to enter the IP to connect. There is no direct connection method, so you will be adding it to your server list. Follow the steps below to connect to your Bedrock server.

1. Launch Bedrock Edition of Minecraft and click Play in the menu.
2. Click Servers at the top of your screen to reveal the list.
   
3. Scroll down and locate the Add Server button and select it.
4. Proceed to fill out the Server Name, Address, and Port fields accordingly.
   
5. When you’re finished, click Save to the bottom right.
6. Select your server and press Join Server at the top right corner.
   
7. Wait for the server to accept your connection.

Troubleshooting Issues

Mismatch Errors
If you receive an error message that says your version is outdated, mismatched mod list, or something similar – make sure to update your game and/or mods. This primarily applies to Java Edition, but Bedrock users can experience this issue if they’re using an outdated version.
 
Connection Refused
This either indicates that the Minecraft server is currently offline or the IP address you entered is incorrect. Double-check that the server is turned online and that you’re using the right IP:Port for the connection address.
 
Unable to Connect to World (Bedrock)
Bedrock Edition can occasionally experience routing issues due to local network caches or pending world generation tasks. Removing the listing from your menu, connecting to a featured public world for a moment, and then re-adding your private server often fixes this glitch.
