Minecraft Bukkit plugins are add-ons for Minecraft servers that enhance gameplay by adding new features, commands, and functionalities. Developed using the Bukkit API, these plugins allow server administrators to customize their servers beyond the default Minecraft experience. They can be used for various purposes, such as managing player permissions, adding mini-games, creating new items or mechanics, and improving server performance. Bukkit plugins are popular in multiplayer Minecraft communities for creating unique and tailored gaming experiences.

To install a Bukkit plugin, you first need to download it from the corresponding developer thread or website, depending on the plugin. In most cases, you will end up with a single file, which may or may not be packed into a .zip archive. Some plugins may also come with additional files or an entire folder. If that’s the case, there is usually an explanation on the website about what to do with it. However, just in case there isn’t, we’ll cover that part here as well.

Please select one of the following instructions, whichever matches your situation best:

If Your Download Contains Only a Single or Multiple .jar Files:

For this example we are going to use Shopkeepers-2.2 3.0

First of all we need to download the file, in this case the download will only give us a .jar file.

    • Stop your server.
    • Upload your .jar file(s) via FTP to the minecraftbukkit/plugins directory.

    • After the upload it should look like this.

    • After that simply save settings and restart your game server.
    • You may now browse the mentioned folder and edit the contained files, if there are any. Note that this is not always the case.

If Your Download Contains a .jar File and an Additional Folder:

    • Follow the steps listed in the section above to install the plugin.
    • Check the thread or website; in most cases, there is already an explanation about what to do with the additional files and folders. If not, proceed with the next steps.
    • Upload the folder(s) to your server’s plugin directory (minecraftbukkit/plugins). The folder should contain .ini, .yml, .conf, or .cfg files. If the files are not normal text files but libraries or other non-human-readable files, just leave them alone; they are most likely dependencies or libraries for the plugin.

After following these steps the plugin should be installed successfully.
