Mod Installation for Dont Starve Together

Mod Installation for Dont Starve Together

Adding mods to your Don’t Starve Together server opens up new characters, quality-of-life tweaks, and total conversions straight from the Steam Workshop. In this Nitrado guide, we’ll show you how to find a mod’s Workshop ID, add it to your server’s startup process, and activate it so everyone on your server can use it.

    Find Your Mod’s Workshop ID

Every Steam Workshop item has its own Workshop ID, and you need that number before you can install a mod. Visit steamcommunity.com, search for the mod you want, and open its Workshop page.

This guide uses the Luffy mod as a worked example. On any mod’s Workshop page, the URL contains the Workshop ID after id=. For Luffy, that URL is steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=380079744, so 380079744 is the Workshop ID you’ll use in the next two steps.

Add the Mod to Your Server’s Startup Process

To download the mod when your server starts, add its Workshop ID to the dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua file, located in /dontstarve/mods/. Open it through Settings > Config Files or Tools > File Browser in your Nitrado Web Interface.

The file already ships with comment lines that explain its install functions and show examples. You only add one new line below those comments, with your own Workshop ID:

    ServerModSetup("380079744")

A Workshop collection’s ID comes from its URL the same way as a single mod’s. The default file uses ServerModCollectionSetup("379114180") as an example: add that function with a collection’s ID to the same file, and every mod in the collection downloads at the next restart. Downloading isn’t activating, though. Each mod in the collection still needs its own ForceEnableMod("workshop-<id>") line in modsettings.lua before it goes live.

Click Save changes, then restart your server to apply the change. Don’t Starve Together downloads the mod into a folder named workshop-<Workshop ID>, but the mod stays inactive until you complete the next step.

    Activate the Mod

Downloading a mod and activating it are two separate steps. To turn the mod on, open the modsettings.lua file in the same /dontstarve/mods/ folder and add its enable line:

    ForceEnableMod("workshop-380079744")

Restart your server again to apply the mod. Once it restarts, the mod is live for everyone who connects.

Mods tagged client_only_mod cannot be installed or force-enabled on the server. They run entirely on each connecting player’s own client, so each player enables them locally instead, and they still work in full multiplayer sessions. Check a mod’s Workshop page before you add it to your startup file.

    Your Camp, Your Rules

Your Don’t Starve Together server now downloads and activates mods automatically on restart, from character reskins to full gameplay overhauls. Try out a few Workshop picks with your friends, and check each one’s tag first to keep your camp running smoothly.
