ARK Performance – How To Improve

How to Improve ARK Performance – Introduction

When you’re out collecting resources and taming dinosaurs in ARK, it’s vital that you can adventure without issues. If FPS drops or game crashes occur in ARK: SE, they ruin the game’s fun, so it’s best to prevent them from occurring. Focusing on game performance, ARK is not an easy case. Even strong computers can struggle with the game. In this article, you’ll learn what options are available to let you fully enjoy your gaming experience on your ARK: SE server.

How to improve your ARK: SE experience

In the following sections, we will show you various methods to improve the performance of ARK: SE on your PC. Since this topic is relatively complex, we will first show you general performance improvements and then jump into the specific adjustments for ARK: Survival Evolved!

    General Tips

To improve the performance of ARK: SE, there are several improvements you can make. First, let’s start with some general tips:

    • Try to run as few additional programs as possible while playing ARK:SE. Your processor and RAM will thank you.
    • Defragmenting your hard drive is typically a good way to increase the general performance of your computer (WARNING: Do not do this if you are using an SSD as it can cause drive issues.)
    • Already have an SSD? Installing ARK on your SSD should provide a boost since an SSD is way faster than a usual HDD!
    • “CPU Core Unparking” is an option that will bring all CPU cores to full power!

    Graphic Adjustments

Now we’ll take care of the graphics settings in the game. Ensuring your resolution and general graphic settings are correct, it’s important to know that some graphics effects are very demanding for your computer, especially for your graphics card. Since the effects can cause performance loss, it can help to turn down complex but unremarkable effects a bit.

    ARK Performance - graphics settings
    • Sky Details – Changes the clouds and weather settings (Recommended = OFF)
    • Shadows – Changes shadow quality for NPCs, foliage, survivors, etc (Recommended = Low-Medium)
    • Occlusion Options – Changes = better space representation (Recommended = OFF)
    • Anti-Aliasing – Changes the anti-aliasing in the game (Recommended = Low-Medium)
    • Ground Clutter – Changes the graphical representations of floor structures (stone, sand, etc) (Recommended = Low-Medium)
    • View Distance – Changes the visibility in the game (Recommended = Low-Medium)
    • Motion Blur – Large performance draw (Recommended = Off)
    • Post Processing – Typically involved realism (depth of field, lens flare, etc) (Recommended = Low-Medium)

    Start Parameters for Steam

If you’re playing ARK: SE, there’s a good chance you’re launching the game through Steam. Here you have the option to set various parameters to help improve ARK’s performance. We will show you which parameters you can use and how to set them in Steam. If you play ARK:SE via Epic Games, feel free to skip the following section.

How to set start parameters in steam

    • First, open the Steam program on your computer.
    • Next, go to your “Library”, right click on “ARK: Survival Evolved”, and select “Properties..“.
    • Afterward, a new window will open. In this window, a bit further down, you will see “Launch options” with a blank text field underneath. This is where you can enter the “Start Parameters” we will show you in the next section.
    • Lastly, close the window by clicking the “X” in the upper-right corner.

You can now start ARK to load those launch options and enjoy an optimized gameplay experience!

ARK Performance - Steam launch options

Here are a few STEAM parameters that can help improve the performance of ARK on your PC. Please don’t hesitate to just use as many of them as you like:

    • “-SM4”- Shader Model 4 – This is the parameter for having the game run with a hybrid of DX10 and DX11 shader models
    • “-nomansky” – All heavenly effects are disabled
    • “-useallavailablecores” – Enables the use of all CPU cores for the game

    NVIDIA Performance Tips

Do you have an Nvidia Graphics card? Try using the built-in options to increase performance: Open the “NVIDIA Control Panel” and go to “Adjust image settings with Preview”, select “Use my preference emphasizing:” and set the slider to Performance.

    Render Distance

With the command “r.ViewDistanceScale ” you can adjust the drawing distance for things like rocks, grasses, and trees. The minimum value is currently 0.1. Playing around with this setting can help you in terms of performance. The higher the distance, the farther away the game will try to render certain objects, adding more load to your GPU. If you need access to admin commands, please go ahead and check this guide where we cover how to be an admin on your ARK: SE Server.
