Project Zomboid Mods – Complete Mod Guide

Setting up mods on your own Project Zomboid server is the perfect way to enhance your multiplayer experience. Whether you want custom items, improved mechanics, or anything else – there’s probably a mod for it. The process to install mods on your server is straightforward, but newcomers might be unfamiliar with the exact steps. With this in mind, we’ve created this Nitrado guide to show you how to install mods on a Project Zomboid server 👏

Installing Mods on Steam

1. Launch Steam and head towards the Workshop for Project Zomboid.
2. Locate the mod you want to install on your server.
   
3. Select it and click the Subscribe button to begin downloading it.
   
4. Scroll down, find the Workshop ID & Mod ID. Save this for later.
   
5. Repeat this process for all the mods, then launch the game.
6. From the main menu, click Mods and enable all of the ones you want.
   
   If you do not see the mod listed here, re-subscribe to it and try again.

Installing Mods on Your Server

1. Head towards your Nitrado Web Interface and stop the server.
2. Navigate to Settings > General from the Dashboard.
   
3. Locate Additional Mods and enter the Mod ID.
   
   If you have more than one mod, separate it by semi-colons (;).
4. Locate Workshop Items and enter the Workshop ID.
   
   Similarly, separate by semi-colons (;) if you have multiple mods.
5. When you’re finished, click Save Changes at the bottom and restart the server.

Common Issues

Here are the most common issues and fixes when setting up mods on your server:

Missing Mod ID

In cases where you’re unable to verify the Mod ID, you can also check this directory on your computer after installing the mod locally: \Steam\steamapps\workshop\modID\mods\modName\media\maps\
 
The Mod ID is the folder name of the mod, so it should be there once installed via Steam. However, most mods include this information on their descriptions.

Missing Workshop ID

In some cases, mods may not include the Workshop ID on their description. Use the URL to find that out instead, which would look like this: …/filedetails/?id=3710887528
 
Simply copy the digits after the ?id= in the URL, that’s the Workshop ID. In Steam, the link should be at the very top when viewing the workshop item.

Mod Requires Map

Some mods might require you to play on a specific map, so you need to adjust the Map field in the general settings on your server. This should be located near the top, so enter the map name listed on the mod and save the changes.

Version Mismatch Errors

In some cases, versions may not match and result in you being unable to join the server. Fixing this is easy! All you need to do is update the game and server to the latest version. Once a new update is released, it can take up to 3 hours for it to be ready on the server. A simple restart will automatically download the latest version to your server. As for your game, check Steam for updates.

Mods for Project Zomboid

There are endless possibilities with modding, but make sure your mods support multiplayer. Some of them via the Steam Workshop might put disclaimers that some features aren’t compatible with servers. Other times, they may be completely unusable in multiplayer. Always check the description and verify it’s supported. If it doesn’t mention anything, you’re probably safe – it doesn’t hurt to try!
