    Windrose Server FAQ

    Windrose Server FAQ

Hosting your own Windrose server is a great way to explore the vast oceans with friends, but sometimes issues can arise. These range from world save problems to being unable to connect, which can be frustrating to troubleshoot. With this in mind, we’ve created this Nitrado guide to summarize the most common questions and solutions to help you fix these issues.

⚠️ For more advanced solutions, we recommend visiting the official Windrose FAQ.

Why Can’t I Join or Find My Server?

There are various reasons why you might be unable to connect or find your Windrose server. Try the following solutions:

    • Restart the game and Steam
    • Restart your router
    • Restart your PC
    • Disable your VPN
    • Temporarily disable your antivirus/firewall
    • Try reconnecting 3–5 times

Unfortunately, there could be a more severe issue that requires more technical solutions. These may include troubleshooting your DNS or network, which are listed in the official FAQ.

Why Am I Stuck or Server / Game Won’t Start?

If you’re stuck on the main menu or your Windrose server / game won’t start properly, then you can try the following solutions:

    • Check that you have enough free disk space
    • Verify game files via Steam
    • Temporarily disable your antivirus
    • Make sure you have enough free RAM
    • Restart your computer
    • Reinstall the game on an SSD (recommended)
    • Reset saves (all progress will be lost)

Additionally, double-check that your Windows username only contains English letters. You might also need to increase your virtual memory, which is shown in the official Windrose FAQ.

    Why Is My Game Crashing?

Whether Windrose is crashing often or periodically, try the following fixes:

    • Update your graphics driver to the latest version
    • Disable Frame Generation (if enabled)
    • Set FPS limit to 60
    • Set render resolution scale to around 50%
    • Increase virtual memory to 2x your RAM

If you’re using tools like MSI Afterburner or ASUS GPU Tweak, try reducing the overclock or reverting to default GPU clock settings. Overclocking can sometimes cause instability during longer play sessions.

Can I Use Mods or Third-party Software?

Windrose does not provide official modding support, along with any third-party software used to run or host the game.

Modding and using external tools can introduce problems that mimic real bugs, so when they’re reported without proper context – the Windrose team may lose valuable resources and time to issues not caused by the game itself. However, there is a dedicated space for players to discuss mods and third-party tools.

    What this means for you:

    • If you are using mods or third-party software, you must clearly state this when reporting a bug.
    • Reports involving such setups may be deprioritized or declined entirely.
    • If third-party software is discovered during investigation and was not disclosed, your report priority will be lowered. We reserve the right to take further measures at our discretion.

    Official Windrose supported environments:

    • Vanilla (unmodified) game client
    • Official Windrose Dedicated Server application
    • Hosting via Nitrado

Anything outside of this scope is considered unsupported.

    • If your issue is related to mods, please contact the mod provider.
    • If it’s related to hosting services, we recommend reaching out to your hosting provider for official support.

The Windrose team kindly asks that you respect their time and resources so they can continue improving the game for all players.

Why Isn’t My World Save Loading on the Server?

If your server starts normally with a fresh world but fails to launch when using an existing save, the issue is often related to how the world data was transferred. In most cases, the save itself is not the problem. Instead, the issue comes from incomplete or improperly handled file transfers, which can lead to missing data or corrupted world files that prevent the server from loading correctly.

    Possible causes:

    • Incomplete file transfer (missing or partially uploaded files)
    • Incorrect transfer mode (ASCII instead of Binary)
    • Files being modified or altered during transfer
    • Downloading or uploading while the server is still running

    Recommended solutions:

    • Do not use FileZilla for transferring server save files, instead use WinSCP or Cyberduck
    • Ensure the server is fully stopped before downloading or uploading any save data
    • Re-download the complete save files from the original source and upload them again
    • Set the transfer mode to Binary to preserve file integrity during upload

    Expected result:

    • The server successfully starts using the existing world
    • No missing chunks, crashes, or startup failures occur
    • The save behaves the same as it did on the original host

    Conclusion

With these troubleshooting solutions, you’ll be back on the high seas in no time! Remember, if you require more advanced fixes for any kind of problem – we strongly recommend checking out the official Windrose FAQ. Whether it’s server or client related, there are solutions for you. Once you’re all patched up, invite your friends and jump into your own Windrose server!
