Chivalry 2 is one of those games where the story acts as a huge motivator to get you to complete your objective. I mean, it’s not every day that a game has a dedicated battle-cry button. The feud between the two major factions which is further impeded on by the foreign third party is an awesome tale with fairly interesting characters. Today, we are going to take a deep dive into the different factions of the world of Chivalry 2 as well as the interesting characters it contains. Let’s begin!
The Agathian Knights were created when King Argon I, king of Olde Agatha, conquered the disparate kingdoms in the Unification War. The Unification War took place long before the plots of either Chivalry: Medieval Warfare or Chivalry 2, and it simply serves as an event that unified the country in what is known now as Olde Agatha. The leadership of the Agathian Knights is dominated by the nobility of Agatha, especially well-to-do families from the rich provinces. As with any medieval story, the nobility flourished and lived over the peasantry. These nobles are highly religious with a strong sense of birthright, loyalty, and honor. Their love of justice, coin, and beauty leads them to greatness and folly.
In the first title, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, Agatha was led by Steward King Feydrid Kearn. He and Agatha were utterly crushed by the Mason Order at the end of The Civil War, previously known as the original Chivalry 1. That’s right, Chivalry 2 suggests that between the feud of Agatha and Mason in the original game, the Mason Order was victorious and has now taken control of the majority of the land.
After having suffered a critical defeat at the hands of the Mason Order, and having been terrorized by the Masons for a massive twenty years, there is a growing yet not uniform desire to cast aside the mercies once shown by their kind. The Agathians have returned under the leadership of Argon II, a young man who claims to be heir to the throne of Agatha.
Also known as Agatha, the Agathian Knights are one of three major factions. The Knights are the soldiers who are still loyal to Danum Argon, King Alfonso Argon’s nephew. They fight Malric and the Mason Order, hoping to keep peace and stability within Agatha, even by being away from home to protect the peace against a supposed distant threat like Tenosia. The Agatha Knights are also known as “loyalists”, and are made up of mostly royalty and nobility, people who once owned most of the lands and peasants before the civil war, and who are distraught by the war at home’s effect on trade and matters of economy.
Emerging from the distant frozen reaches of Olde Agatha with youthful ferocity and an appetite for battle, Argon II takes his seat in Thayic Castle as sovereign of Olde Agatha with the blessing of the Church and the Agathian Royal Council. Argon II’s origins are somewhat obscure, however, as he claims to have fled as a child from an outpost nearby Stoneshill under cover of the night just before the infamous assault. Those who oppose Argon II questioned the convenience of his arrival at the edge of the war, and thus the legitimacy of his claim to the throne, but nevertheless, this man is a beast! You can play as Argon II on Thayic Stronghold, and on top of being a tower of a man with an ungodly large health pool, his signature Longsword deals increased damage with faster-than-normal attacks. Insane!
The Mason Order was founded by the rebellious General Malric in the wake of Argon I’s death during the Crusade. The Crusade was a time when Agatha was undivided, a single faction ruling over the land with too much time on its hands. And so, Agatha decided to attack Tenosia for no particular reason, perhaps hoping to capitalize on their untold riches, technology, and society. Malric was an experienced Agathian general who knew this would fail, and so on the walk of shame back home from utter defeat, he and his highly skilled men staged a rebellion at the best possible time. The forming of the Mason Order led to the First Civil War, from which, after much bloodshed and grueling siege, the Masons emerged victorious. After securing the remainder of the Kingdom under his rule, Malric set out to replenish the strength of his army and leave no question as to the legitimacy of his rule.
The core Mason values of strength, discipline, and ferocity are the driving force in everything they do. The Mason Order originated as a faction built upon individual skill and prowess, as opposed to sheer numbers of men. The embarrassment of defeat to the foreign Tenosians birthed the desire in Malric to reforge the lands and people of Olde Agatha (the nation, not the faction) to be harder and stronger. For better or worse, the Mason Order disputes most of the values of the Agathian Knights, considering birthright and piety “crushing limits.”
As if things weren’t complicated enough! A third faction makes itself known! Tenosia, a strange land to the south has long hovered as a distant threat over the lands of Agatha after the failed crusade that led to the death of King Argon I and ultimately ignited the civil war between the Mason Order and Agathian Knights. Now, Tenosia strikes at Baudwyn’s Bulwark, the longstanding barrier, and border that has held these empires apart and stood unconquered for centuries. Rumors of devastating new technology threaten the ancient stronghold, and if it falls, the lands of Agatha shall burn and weep beneath the vengeance of the Tenosian Empire. Yikes!
The Tenosian Empire is a sophisticated and academic society that has enjoyed a long peace prior to the invasion of the first Crusades. That all changed when war was brought to their shores by the barbarians to the north, and they have spent the last twenty years plotting their retaliation. Built mostly on harsh, arid lands, their people have adapted with wondrous engineering, city planning, and astrology that leave their lands prosperous and rich. But will it last, or will the Mason Order maintain its superiority over the land and strike back?
In the world of Chivalry 2, although we have nations of vast power conflicting with each other at each and every border, most of the important decisions are made by a select few characters of note. These are the important characters who hold power in the world.
Argon II
The time finally came to reveal himself to the world and the Agathian Royal Council just as the kingdom was pushing closer to the edge of the war. In the heartlands of Olde Agatha, ancestral homeland of Argon’s family, he made his identity known to the Agathian Council who made no hesitation to recognize his claim and offer their benevolent guidance to this birthright king of Agatha. Is he the legitimate heir to the throne? It probably doesn’t really matter, because his brilliance, battle prowess, and competency as a general allow him to lead Agatha to victory, and so they accept him, disregarding evidence of his legacy. (Playable in Thayic Stronghold)
Barek Thorne
A renowned commander and warrior who fought alongside Feydrid during the first civil war, Barek Thorne was captured and taken prisoner shortly after Feydrid’s death. For twenty years, he has been tortured and displayed, enslaved as a symbol to those who would dare claim their own strength as equal to Malric. Despite this grueling sentence and punishment, he has endured and spat in the face of the Order and is adamant he will be free of his chains in Falmire. (Playable in Falmire)
King Malric
Malric, the Iron-Fist, founder of the Mason Order, King of all the realms once unified beneath the banner of Argon I. After a defeat at the hands of the Tenosians, he has never been the same. Once Argon I’s right-hand man and leading commander, he has since taken power as king with a focus always on directly hardening the Kingdom, bulwarking against inevitable retaliation from Tenosian, and thus shutting down dissent by any means necessary. Malric had little patience for fools, being known for his short and furious temper. Even so, some claim a softer side was once known to him before he was twisted by the cruelties of his fate.
Valen Tray
Malric’s bastard son, born of Argon’s daughter. (Yikes!) Born out of wedlock, he was given the local Vantear bastard name “Tray.” From a young age, Valen received the highest caliber training in the arts of war and governance from a host of the greatest blade masters and strategists in the kingdom. His unending intensity in his studies was remarkable, even to his teachers. This most certainly was due to his drive and unwavering desire to match the greatness of his father, and although he is a mere provincial lord in comparison, he is a force to be reckoned with in single combat. (Playable in Rudhelm)
Myah Vane
Following the chaos in Tenosia at the outset of the war, Myah Vane rose to power after a series of ruthless assassinations of her own family who sat closer in line to the throne. While most of the nobility were content to cheer their victory in defending the crusades, she knew how lucky they were the invaders had so underestimated the harsh climate. Due to the great wealth of the empire, Myah had finally acknowledged the vulnerability of their nation and through a mixture of ruthlessness and cunning, she convinced the nobility, often by example, that they could no longer afford to put aside the duty of war. The Tigress of Tenosia built her name and bolstered the imperial army on strong claims that she would not rest until the lands in the North were hers…or hells…
Tahar Rahman
Master of the Curved Blades and leader of the imperial army, Tahar is considered the greatest warrior in Tenosia. He claims to have slayed King Argon I himself in single combat and has become a beloved champion to the people of the Tenosian Empire. He is a rugged man of little words and swift action, and he stands as the Empress’ right-hand man and her direct link to the military support of the empire. I kinda wish I could use his curved blades in the actual game, but oh well!
Here’s a family tree chart made by Reddit user Lord_Raymund which I believe puts everything into a nice, organized chart which makes it easier to understand!
You’ve never explored the true depth and magnitude of Chivalry 2! There are so many factions and characters to discover, especially for a game without a single-player campaign. I am super interested in that Tahar individual in particular, as I think the reverse grip curved blades are extremely cool. I just hope that in the future, we can see those curved blades in-game for some epic battles! Prepare yourself for the epic fights ahead as you rush into the lore in style on your own Chivalry 2 game server!
