The Sift: From Dungeons 2 to Vanilla Minecraft

The Sift: From Dungeons 2 to Vanilla Minecraft

Playing though Minecraft Dungeons 2 gives us our very first look at The Sift, marking the first new dimension added to the game in over 14 years. Mojang Studios publicly advertised the action RPG sequel as an early preview of what players can expect in Minecraft Vanilla next year. I’ve spent 15+ hours exploring and fighting through this new realm, and it looks incredibly promising.

The main question for players is how much of this content will actually cross over to Java and Bedrock Edition. Based on my experience and the track record of Dungeons 1, this can be easily answered. However, take all of this with a grain of salt – it’s speculation at the end of the day. With that in mind, let’s dive into what you can expect in The Sift for Minecraft Vanilla based on Dungeons 2 content 👏

First Hand Impressions of The Sift

Spending hours in Dungeons 2 reveals a vibrant yet dangerous ecosystem filled with various passive and hostile mobs. The biomes feature unique flora, fluid hazards like Ichor, and environmental mechanics. Players first reach this area via Rifts, but players in Vanilla Minecraft will have to activate the Deep Dark Portal in Ancient Cities.

While the game emphasizes high speed combat and loot progression, a curated collection of these biomes, mobs, and content is set to cross over to Vanilla in 2027. It’s likely that some mobs will remain exclusive to Minecraft Dungeons 2 because their mechanics were built for hack and slash encounters. These would include mini-bosses and bosses, but variants might see its way in the main game.

Besides that, the overall aesthetic is a mixture of The End and Overworld. There’s even mobs that look almost identical to the Sniffer, which hints at a curious question about the connection. There’s still lots to explore and uncover, as not everything is shown.

Equipment, Loot, & Blocks

Do not expect the vast array of unique weapons, armor, artifacts, and equipment from Dungeons 2 to make their way into Vanilla Minecraft. These items exist purely to support class builds and dungeon crawler progression.

While a couple of core materials could potentially cross over, they would need to be drastically reworked to fit survival balance. Vanilla Minecraft thrives on player creativity rather than stat heavy loot drops, so the vast majority of equipment will remain locked inside the spin off.

Keep in mind that the blocks and vegetation will almost certainly be in the main game. This is great news for anyone already planning their awesome builds. Although only blocks tied to Minecraft Dungeons 2 will be kept exclusive to it.

Singing & Music Mechanics

One of the most intriguing aspects observed while playing Dungeons 2 is the heavy emphasis on sound, singing, and music within The Sift. Certain creatures in this realm actively use vocalizations to create life and possibly even manipulate their surroundings. This musical focus could play a major role in Vanilla Minecraft.

Sound mechanics or singing is the key to activating the long dormant deepslate portal frames found in Ancient Cities, which is now confirmed in Dungeons 2. Additionally, musical interactions might even be required to spawn or tame specific mobs within the dimension once you step through to the other side.

It’s all speculation, but it’s shown to be important and makes an appearance throughout the game. We can expect something similar in Vanilla Minecraft, but likely an altered version of it.

What About the Illagers?

In Dungeons 2, the narrative centers around three rogue Illagers who discovered The Sift, harvested its soul energy, and formed the Illager High Council. Will these Illager factions appear inside Vanilla’s Sift dimension? Short answer – very unlikely.

Including this storyline in base Minecraft would piggyback too heavily on the specific campaign of the spin off. Vanilla deliberately avoids curated linear storylines, choosing instead to let players discover environmental lore, watch community breakdown videos, or construct their own narrative in singleplayer worlds.

The dimension in Vanilla will focus on sandbox exploration rather than a scripted invasion story.

Final Thoughts

All of this indicates a surprising amount of the content seen in Dungeons 2 will eventually reach Vanilla Minecraft in 2027. Mojang will refine and rebalance these mobs, biomes, and mechanics so they align seamlessly with the base game’s overall theme and aesthetic.

As experimental snapshots and Bedrock Previews approach, you will get to experience this for yourself in Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition. Be on the lookout next year for more updates! When it arrives, you can host your own server with Nitrado to play with friends in The Sift.
