Game Description

The modifications Bukkit and Spigot for the successful game Minecraft allows players to integrate extensions, or plugins, to modify the game. These modifications are available on the prepaid Game Servers hosted by Nitrado.

The fields of application are very diverse and reach from rights management of players, different ways to change the world, to complete stand-alone game modes. The possibilities are nearly endless and allow the creation of a unique gaming experience.

After installing Minecraft Bukkit/Spigot, Nitrado offers a selection of the most used plugins for direct installation to the server. This selection gives the first impression of modifying the game. If these do not fulfill the needs of the players, there is the option to upload more plugins to the server using FTP.

Technically, the Mod Bukkit is a programming interface, which allows developers to create and integrate plugins. The modification, which runs on the servers is called CraftBukkit. An alternative is the modification Spigot. This is an optimized version of CraftBukkit, which also allows the implementation of plugins.


Minecraft Bukkit started in September 2010 through the development of a modification named hMod, from the developer hey0 and other developers. This mod was used to improve Minecraft servers through the use of more functions and features. This was the birth for the possibility of server modification.

But two months into the beta phase, Bukkit/Craftbukkit began. It was published by former hMod developers, among them, Dinnerbone and Grum, which were subsequently hired by Mojang.

But this development brought controversy to the community. For example, the community saw the new Bukkit mod as a theft of the hMod. The hMod development was stopped on January 5th, 2011. Through this, Bukkit was now the most used server mod.

But Bukkit was not ready to use yet, and there were other delays in publication. The development team of Bukkit and CraftBukkit wanted to release the software as freeware, which led to legal complications with the license rights to the Mojang code, which Bukkit used. Even the talks between the Bukkit developers and Mojang on January 19th, 2011 brought no agreement on the license issue. A usable Version of CraftBukkit for the Beta 1.2 was finally released in February 2011.

Regular development of the Modification was possible until the announcement of Minecraft version 1.8 on August 21st, 2014. At this time, the main developer, “EvilSeph”, called the Bukkit project had ended. One of the reasons was the still unresolved licensing situations. Therefore, Bukkit was not allowed to be published, because it used the original Mojang code.

This report caused a sensation in the Bukkit community, because the new Minecraft versions could not be supported and thus also the servers that were running on the current version could not support Bukkit Plugins any longer. The real reason for not supporting the development any longer was the developers waning interest in this project, as well as the big changes that Minecraft 1.8 brought. Also, the whole team worked as volunteers on this project, which was another incision. After a few talks between Mojang and the Bukkit team on September 3rd, 2014, the developer 'Wolverness' joined in and requested the removal of all CraftBukkit content on various Websites. Supported by the DMCA-laws, he claimed this content as his own intellectual property. Because of this, the Bukkit project was incapacitated and adjusted.

At this time, the online game portal Curse, which hosted the Bukkit websites, joined in. They took control over the administration of the Bukkit forum, under the leadership of the Curse worker 'Kaelten'. So changes to the plugins, as well as the plugin collection could be provided again.

The only question was when the new CraftBukkit 1.8 would appear. This could not be determined due to the outstanding dispute between Mojang and 'Wolverness'. Finally, the law was clarified on October 18th, 2014 by the lawyers of the Spigot team, another Minecraft based modification. Now it was certain that both the mod Spigot, as well as CraftBukkit, would be updated to version 1.8, which finally took place on the 28th of November, 2014.


Since then, there have been several new, innovative projects. Up in front was the modification Sponge. This is an alternative to the existing modification. By using MIT-licenses, legal consequences and possible shutdowns should be avoided. The Minecraft Forge-supported programming opens additional possibilities for Bukkit.
