How to Add an Admin to Your Left 4 Dead 2 Server

Getting admin rights on your Left 4 Dead 2 server means you can remove disruptive players, run server commands without accessing the console separately, and keep your sessions running the way you want. SourceMod handles all of this through a single configuration file. This guide shows you how to set it up on your Nitrado server.

What You Need Before You Start

SourceMod must be installed and running before you can add admins. It also requires MetaMod:Source to function. On Nitrado, both install together through the Addons option in the Tools menu, which is covered in step 1 below.

You also need your Steam ID. See How to Find Your Steam ID below if you do not have it ready.

How to Add an Admin to Your Left 4 Dead 2 Server

1. Make sure your server has SourceMod Installed. (In case it is not installed, stop your server, then click on the option addons on the menu Tools and click the button Install when the installation is finished start your server
2. Stop your server and click on the option File Explorer in the Tools menu of your web interface, and open the file “admins.cfg” found in the path: “l4d2/left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/configs/”
3. Go to the bottom of the file and you will find the following code:

   Admins
   {
   }

4. Enter the data of the player that you want to have administrator permissions in the following format:

   Admins
   {
       "NitradoPlayer"
       {
           "auth" "steam"
           "identity" "Steam_ID"
           "immunity" "99"
           "flags" "z"
       }
   }

   For Example:

   Admins
   {
       "NitradoPlayer"
       {
           "auth" "steam"
           "identity" "STEAM_0:0:XXXXXXX"
           "immunity" "99"
           "flags" "z"
       }
   }

   Note on Steam ID format: A legacy Steam ID has three parts separated by colons: STEAM_0:0:XXXXXXX or STEAM_0:1:XXXXXXX. Replace the X values with your actual account numbers. The middle segment is always 0 or 1, and the final segment is a number unique to your account.

    

   The flags "z" value grants root-level admin, which includes all permissions. The immunity "99" value prevents other admins with lower immunity numbers from targeting this player.

5. Click on the button Save Changes and start your server

How to Find Your Steam ID

From the in-game console: Join any Left 4 Dead 2 server, open the developer console with the tilde (~) key, and type status. Your Steam ID appears in the player list next to your name in STEAM_0:X:XXXXXXXX format.

From a lookup tool: Go to steamid.io, enter your Steam profile URL or username, and copy the SteamID value (the one starting with STEAM_0).

Verifying Your Admin Access

After the server restarts, join your Left 4 Dead 2 server and open the developer console. Type sm_admin and press Enter. If SourceMod recognises your Steam ID, the admin menu opens.

If nothing happens, check these three things: the Steam ID in admins.cfg matches the format above exactly, the file was saved before the server restarted, and SourceMod is running (a SourceMod version message appears in the console when you connect).
