The Philadelphia 76ers Involved With Esports

76ers bought Dignitas and Apex Esport Teams

The Philadelphia 76ers are now the first United States professional sports team to invest in an eSports franchise. The 76ers are revolutionizing the sports world in the US, as they not only purchased two eSports teams, but will also be using their own staff to assist in the eSports operations. Staff members will now be selling eSports sponsorships as well as the 76er sponsorship packages.

The Philadelphia 76ers’ eSports teams include Dignitas and Apex. Team Dignitas is headquartered in the United Kingdom and currently competes in Counter Strike: Global Offensive, FIFA, League of Legends and more. Apex is an American eSports organization that currently has two League of Legends teams competing in various tournaments. The two organizations will now compete under the Dignitas banner in the League of Legends Championship series.

Deal terms were not disclosed to the public. But according to ESPN, the eSports organizations are valued between $5 million and $15 million. 76ers CEO, Scott O’Neil did his research and recognized what a valuable investment this would be. He said, “There’s no denying the fact that esports presents corporate America with a way to reach millennials in a way stick and ball sports just isn’t”.

Many other affiliates with the NBA have also been investing in eSports. For example, former NBA player, Rick Fox owns eSports Team Echo Fox, and Jonas Jerebko from the Boston Celtics owns the organization Renegades. Esports is a rapidly growing industry, and is projected to generate $493 million in revenue in 2016.
