Frequently Asked Questions

Running a Valheim server raises a handful of questions again and again, from crossplay and mod support to what changes when 1.0 launches. Here are straight answers to the ones we hear most, updated for the September 9, 2026 release.

Which Platforms Can Play Valheim?

Currently, Windows, Linux Mac and Xbox players can play Valheim. Valheim 1.0 launches on September 9, 2026, releasing on the PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, with crossplay across every platform. A dedicated server still holds 1 to 10 players, the same cap Valheim has always used.

Does My Valheim Server Support Crossplay?

Yes. Turn on Crossplay under Settings > General in your Nitrado Web Interface, save the change, and restart the server. Crossplay switches the server to the crossplay backend, so players on any platform, including PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 once 1.0 launches, can find and join it. Leave Crossplay off and only Steam players can see or join the server.

Note: After you change the Crossplay setting, the public server list can take a while to update, since Valheim’s master servers cache server details.

What Happens to My Server at the 1.0 Launch?

Valheim leaves Early Access on September 9, 2026, when version 1.0 launches. Your existing world stays playable: new content, including the Deep North biome, generates only in areas you have not explored yet. Iron Gate recommends starting a fresh world for the fullest experience, but it is not required.

My Valheim Server Is Lagging: What Should I Do?

Valheim does not use peer-to-peer networking. Data always flows between your client and the server, never directly between clients, but the game runs its logic on clients rather than the server. When you’re alone in an area, your client controls every creature and object there and syncs the results to the server. Once another player joins you, you keep control of most objects until you leave, and they take over from there.

This setup lets Valheim handle heavy physics on the client side without overloading the server, but it makes the game sensitive to one player’s connection. If the player controlling nearby monsters has high ping, everyone else in that area feels the lag too, even with a solid connection of their own.

If lag continues, deleting your world’s files makes Valheim generate a brand new world under the same name the next time the server starts.

⚠️ Before making changes to your Valheim server, we recommend making a backup. Deleting your world files is permanent and cannot be undone.

1. Stop your Valheim server.
2. Open Tools > File Browser in your Web Interface.
3. Follow the path valheim > savedata > worlds.
4. Delete the world files.
5. Start your server again.

Can I Install Mods on My Server?

Iron Gate offers no official mod support. It cannot guarantee any mod keeps working once Valheim 1.0 releases, since mods need time to catch up after major updates. Consoles, including Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, have no mod support at all. On PC, you can add mods to Valheim with the BepInEx loader.
