What to Expect in the New ICARUS DLC
New Map PROMETHEUS & Three Unique Biomes
First and foremost, one of the biggest features you’ll see in the ICARUS DLC is a brand-new map called PROMETHEUS. The latest map to ICARUS is quite eerie and on top of that, features the hardest difficulty level of the game. In it, players will encounter three new biomes to explore: a molten volcanic region, murky swamplands, and an eerie alien grasslands. These new regions are sure to hold many interesting secrets and some special gear to collect. If that wasn’t enough though, this map also introduces a new currency mineral known as Red Exotics that can be found in exotic flora. With these, you’ll be able to purchase an assortment of new items which we will cover below! What are you most excited about with the PROMETHEUS map?
10+ Mutated Alien Creatures to Encounter in ICARUS DLC
Alongside the map, 10+ mutated alien creatures have also been added as a result of the terraforming process drastically impacting the local wildlife. This has created terribly mutated creatures & species including Dreadwings, Lava Hunters, Needlers, Dracs, and Drifters that roam PROMETHEUS. Using your skills and the help of your friends, you’ll need to defeat or run away from these dangers to progress and visit new areas.
New Series of Missions / Operations
A new series of Operations or missions will be available to play, taking you and your friends on a sequenced story leading you through a gradually darkening mystery. These missions will be integrated into the open world of ICARUS, ensuring players will encounter these as they explore. The missions you’ll encounter will also feature new logic and technology, such as allowing you to launch any mission from your Open World. This is planned to be added further to some of the map missions in Olympus and Styx in the future Hypatia update.
100+ Brand-New Items Across the ICARUS DLC
With such an expansive DLC, new items were expected and the development team handling this expansion did not disappoint. In total, players will be able to craft, deploy, and use over 100+ new items found across ICARUS. This will offer five new raw resources, creating new recipes and tiers including Obsidian, Scoria, Crystalised Miasma, and more.
From there, the new resource currencies have also allowed the introduction of 30+ additional items in the Orbital Workshop, ready to be purchased. These items, aimed at benefiting your survival, can be accessed in cargo pods from the surface.
Extreme Weather Events for Each ICARUS Biome
Lastly, a smaller but nonetheless important new feature you’ll face while exploring is extreme weather events. These events will be specific to the biome you’re in, reflective of atmospheric conditions. This is sure to improve the immersion as you explore, build shelter, and upgrade in ICARUS!
Major Upcoming ICARUS Changes & Focuses
Combination of Open World and Missions
As mentioned above, the new missions were aimed to work in the open world of ICARUS, as it was a highly requested feature of players. Moving forward, ICARUS is planning to continue this momentum with more mission features being integrated into the open world. This will include a way to extract exotics in Open World mode for all maps. While you’ll still be able to access missions the old way as one-off Operations Missions, this will open a lot of possibilities as you adventure into ICARUS.
Performance Improvements in Future ICARUS Updates
If major additions and quality-of-life improvements were not enough, ICARUS is also planning to put a heavy focus on enhancing the performance of the game. This has already been done to some degree, however, the developers have mentioned resolving the occasional stuttering and hitching is not a simple fix. Rather, this requires many small adjustments that sometimes result in slight improvements. That said, over many weeks of performing these fixes, the ICARUS development team believes they’re starting to make a real impact on the stuttering, having seen a reduction in how often it occurs. Further changes and performance improvements are expected to be rolled out with future updates.
Regular Future Updates (including the upcoming free Hypatia ICARUS Update)
On top of the dedication that the ICARUS team has shown, another upcoming improvement to the game is the plan for more regular ICARUS updates. Already, the team has released weekly updates for the last 90 weeks in a row on top of bigger named updates and this latest paid ICARUS DLC. The developers have stated there is a lot more to come too! Here is a brief overview of what we can expect in the coming weeks for ICARUS:
- An upcoming free update named Hypatia, reworking missions on Olympus and Styx for Open World mode and an Orbital Exchange system for gear and items in the Biolab Research Lab.
- Next week’s update is planned to feature new Metal Wind Turbines and wind power.
- On top of that, ICARUS has opened an experimental branch for testing the latest updates early, ensuring the developers can gather information and fix hitches before they make it to the base game.
Upcoming Twitch Drops – The Bone Armor Saga
To end off the exciting content you can look forward to in future updates, the developers have planned a Twitch drop session. During these, players can watch their favorite ICARUS Twitch streamers to earn rewards.
