Rust Industrial Update – Introduction
With a Rust server, efficiency has been taken to a new level thanks to the Rust Industrial update! This update, released by Facepunch Studios, is aimed to bring new avenues for automation and creation. With automated conveyor belts and an assortment of other tools, there are endless new ways to store, smelt, and transfer your items.
Alongside lots of new items and machines, we’re also seeing Hapis Island being retired but it looks like it’s for the better. To learn more about the map changes, machines, automation, and more, follow us below as we dive into the update available on your Rust server hosting!
What Awaits You in the Rust Industrial Update
New Items and Machines
A significant focus of the Rust Industrial update was held on new tools, items, and machines. With these tools, you and your friends will be able to maximize efficiency and automation on your Rust game server. You can learn about each of the new tools and industrial systems below!
Storage Adapter
Storage adapters will be the initial starting point for a majority of Industrial plans you may have. The adapters can be attached to any existing storage entity you have on your server and will not require any power. These adapters will be placable on different points of the storage for the easiest possible placement. These placement points will generally allow for input and output through the adapter, however, there are some exceptions which include:
- While using a furnace, the input will insert items into the Fuel slots while the output will remove items.
- If attached to a locker, the adapter will only access one partition. Attaching three storage adapters will enable access to all partitions.

- Small Furnace
- Large Furnace
- Refinery
- Electric Furnace
- Locker
- Fridge
- Drop box
- Vending Machine
Industrial Conveyor
An Industrial Conveyor handles all of the moving of items in the Rust Industrial update, from one storage to another, using the storage adapters. Every conveyor is limited to up to 16 storage adapters and will move any items that it can between them. With a conveyor filter, you can set up more precise movement and transferring of your items including maximum and minimum batch amounts. Additionally, based on the items you’re moving, you can use the Filter Pass and Filter Fail electrical passthrough features to control other parts of your industrial network.
Pipe Tool
Pipe tools are here and they’re quite similar to Wire or Hose tools. Able to place 4 different colors of pipes, pipe tools are used to connect Industrial entities such as conveyors and storages. While placing pipes, the anchor points will need to be a small distance apart from one another and they cannot go through building blocks or Vending Machines. That said, they will be able to go through deployables such as doors.
Industrial Splitter & Combiner
To funnel and split the flow of items, Industrial Splitters and Industrial Combiners from the Rust Industrial update can be used. When connected to a conveyor output, the conveyor will be capable of spreading its resources across all storage connections. For example, if the conveyor is connected to a splitter with three storage attached and you’re sending 300 pieces of wood, each box will receive 100 wood.
Industrial Crafter
Upon attaching an Industrial Crater to a workbench, this machine will assist in automating the crafting of items using a provided blueprint and the required materials. There will be slots to insert a blueprint and the required materials and, with a little power, it’ll turn on and start creating items for you and your friends!
Electric Furnace
Mightier than a regular furnace, the electric furnace is a complement to the other industrial items that have been added. Requiring power to run, the Electric Furnace can smelt faster and doesn’t produce charcoal.
Brand-New Server Convar Options
- server.conveyorMoveFrequency – How often conveyors attempt a move (default 5s)
- server.industrialCrafterFrequency – How often crafters attempt to craft something (default 5s)
- server.maxItemStacksMovedPerTickIndustrial – How many whole stacks a conveyor can move in a single tick (default 12)
Server Changes and Rust Improvements
- Improved server performance for chains of water containers
- You can now increase the blur quality of depth of field through the option graphics.dof_kernel_count (0,1,2,3)
- Can disable particle and animator LOD for cinematics (graphics.disableParticleLod and graphics.disableAnimatorLod)
- The server name no longer appears in the Rust+ menu if streamer mode is active
- Codelock default options have been changed around
- There are now several different varieties of train loot wagons (different sets of crates)
Fixes Changelog
- Fixed behavior when attempting to spectate a player via the admin tools when another player with the same name is on the server
- Kicking a player via the admin tools will now correctly use the supplied kick reason
- Fixed an issue where the admin UI would no longer function if the player disconnected from the server while the UI is open
- Fixed aggressive rowboat LOD levels (details disappeared too soon)
- Fixed incorrect notes on bass guitar and xylobone when using MIDI input
- Fixed missing ceiling collision in water treatment plant “pigeon nest” building
- Fixed code lock lights no longer being visible through transparent objects like glass
- Fixed Blackjack tables using hold-to-dismount if the hold to dismount convar was set above zero
- Fixed sfx playing incorrectly if a shot ends while an sfx is triggered in the demo editor
- Fixed gibs sometimes failing to spawn after a while when scrubbing through a demo
Hapis is Retiring Forever
As with all great changes, sometimes loss is a necessity. That is the case with Hapis Island, a static map in Rust that was simply taking too many resources to maintain. This is a quote directly from Facepunch Studio’s latest blog:
“We’re a small development team with no dedicated staff focusing on map design and creation, our mapping attention is focused on procedural maps. Hapis has continuously been developed on the sidelines as a lower-priority project with any free time Petur has. Free time is harder to find nowadays as we focus more on larger, longer-term features with a higher level of polish. Hapis Island needs a lot of attention requiring hundreds of work hours to be polished and kept fresh, which we can’t currently give it.”
While it can be unfortunate to be losing Hapis, we believe this will lead to other positive changes as Rust’s development moves forward. Some of those improvements are already underway with an improved focus on the custom map community and on the focus on additions to procedurally generated maps. We’re excited to see what the future holds for Rust and the potential of custom maps!
