Several new features have been teased in the trailers and confirmed by the developers of Endnight Games. Most of them are new items, entities, or mechanics, but they also greatly improved the graphics and animations. With the latest Unity engine and motion capture for a majority of the enemies, Endnight Games was able to recreate realistic movements and actual facial expressions. Water droplets show up on your skin and your weapons whenever it rains and trees will have a unique cutting simulation each time. One of the features we are most excited about is the steam workshop integration, which was hinted at in one of the FAQs. Imagine creating your building blueprints for players worldwide to use or the endless possibilities that mods could offer.
Companions can accompany you on the island and act differently depending on how you interact with them. According to the developers, they can be either ignored, appealed to, scared off, or even killed, and how you interact with them is entirely up to you. Endnight Games’ developers have hinted at more available companions that can help with certain tasks. Two of them have already been shown, confirmed, and talked about by the developers.
Virginia is a mutant much like her counterpart from The Forest, albeit much more appealing as she still has a normal face and torso. She was shown in the first official trailer and appears to have three arms and legs. She is shown dual-wielding a shotgun and a pistol, being capable of wielding weapons and fighting alongside your character. No other uses are explicitly shown or talked about, but chances are high that she can also gather resources just like Kelvin.
Kelvin is another companion that follows you around and helps you in your journey. He seems to be a fellow soldier, who arrived with you on the island but suffered severe head trauma leaving him unable to hear or speak. The player can command Kelvin to do certain things, like gathering resources, by writing instructions on a notepad. He is said to be like an additional player that does tedious tasks for you but is a little bit slower than a normal player. With Kelvin by your side, he will prove to be a tremendous asset in building your base.
Initially, Endnight Games planned to start a new experimental project with a heavy focus on A.I. but eventually realized some of those ideas would be perfect for a sequel of The Forest. When they started the development of Sons Of The Forest they used those concepts to create a new A.I. tool called V.A.I.L. to improve the behavior of all entities. Enemies now have different factions who may fight among themselves, and types, which will decide how they act. They change interactions according to seasons, have no more static behavior (A.I. feels angry, afraid, thirsty, hungry, tired, etc.), and move accordingly. In a Q&A session the devs named some of the new mutants that can be seen in the trailers:
Fingers is a mutant with multiple fingers spreading from its head down to its torso, making it look like a sideways mouth. One can only imagine the horror of being charged by one of these mutants.
Twins looks similar to conjoined twins, therefore the name, and is capable of climbing ceilings and probably walls. In one of the trailers, it was seen together with Fingers on the surface world, meaning its location is not limited to caves.
For players of The Forest, this mutant might be slightly familiar as it shares the same name as one of the harder enemies of the game. John is the name of a mutant in the Forest that consists of multiple smaller entities and looks like a worm. Its successor John 2.0 is also worm-like but looks more like 2 bodies combined at their torsos. A truly terrifying sight.
Sluggy is assumed to be the large blob located in the Sahara Therapeutics lab in the first game. It moves around by dragging its massive body across the floor with its several arms. A large horde of mutant babies is also seen alongside Sluggy, suggesting that this boss will have some smaller enemies surrounding it during a fight.
In addition to new enemies, there are also a lot of new items for players to use. Sons Of The Forest expands the previous weaponry and adds multiple firearms, although they are said to be scarce and should be used wisely. New tools are also available and will help the player in the environment. Some of the most notable items are:
The shovel was confirmed to be an important tool for players as it is necessary for digging up secrets of the island. In the first trailer, it was used to dig up the entrance of a bunker, which is assumed to have a 3D printer inside of it. There may be many more of these bunkers hidden across the island for players to dig up.
In one of the trailers, a guitar can be seen leaning against a house and in a Q&A the devs have confirmed that the guitar will not be a prop, but a usable weapon, with which you can also play some riffs with.
Further improving the crafting mechanics, the 3D printer is used to craft small components that can be combined into more complex items. In the image above it is used to craft a mask that can be worn to disguise the player as one of the cannibal factions.
The pistol is one of the many firearms added to the sequel. In The Forest, the only real firearms were the Flare Gun and the Flintlock Pistol, which had a long reloading animation and also rare ammunition. In Sons Of The Forest firearms and ammunition are also supposed to be a rare resource, but it is a significant upgrade.
Another addition to firearms is the shotgun. Being not only able to deal massive damage, but also make us feel safe when encountering a large group of enemies, the shotgun will be a trusty weapon for every survivor.
Melee combat is one of the most important aspects of Sons Of The Forest as ranged weapons will not always suffice, especially in close quarters. To create some distance between you and a horde of enemies you should use the Stun Baton as it will hopefully leave the enemies paralyzed for a brief period.
Solar panels will help you charge batteries and keep simple electronics running, such as lights or heaters. They are a very valuable source of energy for any of your electronic devices.
The chainsaw in The Forest was not only used to quickly cut down trees but also as a weapon for defending yourself against an enemy. It’s a great tool as it doesn’t require any stamina to use, although its downside is that it needs a constant fuel source which you could only find in caves. With the newly Battery Operated Chainsaw and the Solar Panels, we do not need to venture into the caves to locate such fuel sources. In a short Twitter video from Endnight Games, it is also used against Fingers inside what looks like a scientific facility.
The map size is confirmed to be 4-5 times larger than The Forest and changes according to weather conditions and seasons to avoid a static environment. The location of the island is also confirmed to be on Site 2, which can be glimpsed towards the end of the first game. In some areas, there are more lush forests and in some others, there is rocky terrain. Along with a huge new island to explore, Endnight Games improved most of the gameplay players loved in The Forest.
As said before, enemies have a better A.I. and will not follow strictly scripted behavior. Depending on how you fight with certain enemies they will act differently. The devs of Sons Of The Forest confirmed that there are leadership and religious stats upon which the enemies will react depending on their stats. Leadership can be interpreted as the tenacity of the enemy group. If there is an enemy with high leadership it is more likely that enemies won’t leave you alone after you kill some of them off. To lower their morale you have to kill the leader of the group and chances are they will flee. Religion on the other hand determines what enemies will do. The different factions of enemies have varying goals and try to accomplish them in their own ways. Whether that’s stealing your resources or defending their territory from other factions.
Sons Of The Forest does have to change weather conditions, including changing the seasons. In winter, snow will fall and freeze the water. Fewer berries will be available in the bushes and enemies will not pursue as far, although they might craft and wear warm suits to fight the cold.
Crafting and building are more immersive, showing animations for each step and requiring actual work. In The Forest, buildings have prefab blueprints, and items are instantly created. In Sons Of The Forest, you will see an animation for the actual crafting and buildings can be designed however you want them to look, but you can still turn on the blueprint option in the game menu. They completely removed the sanity system which was only necessary for building certain things like the effigies. More traps will be available which will make defending your base less difficult and offer you more freedom in how you can place them.
Currently, Endnight Games have only released the PC version of Sons Of The Forest with no information about a console release. They did mention however that they would like to eventually release the game for game consoles, but are presently focusing on the PC version. We do hope for a console release and a crossplay function, so everyone can play on a Sons Of The Forest server together no matter what device they are playing on.
The devs of Endnight Games did mention that they are planning to release additional free DLC post-launch. No further information is known about the content, release, or placeholder names of the DLC. Console players have to be patient as Sons Of The Forest is only known to be released for PC with no current information about a console version.
