How to Fix the Incompatible Version Error in Valheim

With Valheim 1.0 launching on September 9, 2026, PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 all update at the same time. When a big update like this rolls out, an Incompatible Version error can appear if your client and your Valheim server briefly fall out of sync. Why You See the Incompatible Version Error

A Valheim client and server can only connect when they’re running the same game version. On a crossplay server, that rule applies to every player who joins, whether they’re on PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, or Nintendo Switch 2.

Outdated Game

Your Valheim client hasn’t downloaded the latest update. This is most common right after Iron Gate ships a patch, when every platform updates at once.

Outdated Server

Your Valheim server hasn’t picked up the same update as your client yet. Nitrado applies most game updates automatically, but the timing can briefly lag behind a fast-moving client update.

Mod Version Mismatch

A mod built for an older game version, or a mismatch between the mod version on your server and your client, can also trigger this error. Remove the mod, or wait for a build that matches your current game version. This cause applies to PC only: consoles have no mod support in Valheim.

How to Fix the Incompatible Version Error

Once you know the cause, the fix takes just a few minutes.

Update Your Valheim Game

On PC, update through Steam:

1. Open Steam.
2. Go to your Library.
3. Right-click Valheim, then select Properties.
4. Open the Updates tab and turn on automatic updates.
5. Check the Downloads tab for any pending updates.

On Xbox, PlayStation 5, or Nintendo Switch 2, update Valheim through your platform’s store app before you reconnect.

Update Your Nitrado Valheim Server

Nitrado game servers update automatically, usually shortly after the update releases. If your server hasn’t updated yet, open your Nitrado Web Interface, go to the Dashboard, and click Restart.

The Version badge on the Dashboard shows exactly which build your server is running, so you can confirm it matches your game client before you reconnect.

With your client and your Valheim server on the same version, the Incompatible Version error should be gone, and you’re ready to reconnect.
