What does Fortitude do in ARK?

Every biome in ARK: Survival Ascended throws something different at you, from freezing snow fields to blistering desert heat and the disease carried by swamp creatures. One character stat helps you handle all three: Fortitude. In this Nitrado guide, we’ll show you what Fortitude actually does, how it works the same way in ARK: Survival Ascended and the original ARK: Survival Evolved, and how to increase it.

Importance of Fortitude

Fortitude measures your character’s resistance to a specific set of environmental hazards. Raising it strengthens three things: your Hypothermic and Hyperthermic insulation against extreme temperatures, your resistance to torpor, and your resistance to diseases such as Mega Rabies and Swamp Fever.

Snowy and desert regions push your character toward the edges of hypothermia and hyperthermia, and higher Fortitude reduces the damage those extremes deal. Torpor works differently. It builds up when you’re hit by certain wild creatures, toxic foods, or tranquilizer darts, and enough of it knocks you unconscious. Higher Fortitude slows that buildup, giving you more time to react before you go down.

Fortitude works the same way whether you’re playing on an ARK: Survival Ascended server or the original ARK: Survival Evolved, since both games share the same underlying attribute system.

How to Increase Fortitude

As you level up, you earn attribute points to spend on any stat, including Fortitude. Putting points into Fortitude raises your resistance to the conditions covered above. Here’s what each point does:

1. Heat and Cold Resistance: Reduces the damage you take from extreme temperatures, so you can spend longer in hostile biomes without constant health loss.
2. Torpor Resistance: Raises your maximum torpor limit and slows how fast torpor builds up, so creature attacks and tranquilizer darts take longer to knock you out.
3. Disease Resistance: Lowers your risk of contracting diseases from wild creatures, including Mega Rabies and Swamp Fever.

Balancing Fortitude with Your Other Stats

Fortitude is worth investing in, but it isn’t the only stat keeping you alive. Health, Stamina, and Carry Weight all compete for the same attribute points, so how you balance them depends on how you play. If you spend most of your time gathering resources, lean harder into Carry Weight and Stamina and treat Fortitude as a secondary investment. If you’re heading into extreme biomes or fighting other players, prioritize it earlier.

Gear and consumables cover some of the same ground as Fortitude. Cold- and heat-resistant armor and tonics that reduce torpor buildup both help you survive extreme conditions without spending every point on this one stat.
