Minecraft Update 1.20 Trails & Tales – Introduction
Minecraft, a game with endless possibilities, will soon be introducing the Trails & Tales Minecraft 1.20 update to your Minecraft server! Inside this update, players will be able to experience new mobs like the Sniffer and Camel, armor trims, the long-awaited archeology, a new cherry blossom biome, and more. While the exact date for the release is still unknown, it won’t be long before the update is released. You can already test the new update in pre-release versions available on your Minecraft game client. In this article, we will cover all the exciting features, and we will show you how you can test the Minecraft Trails & Tales update!
What’s New in the Minecraft Update 1.20 Trails & Tales?
Brand-New Minecraft Mobs
Sniffer – Ancient Seed Mob
After a challenging Minecraft Live 2022 mob vote, the Sniffer came out on top as the community mob coming to the Minecraft update 1.20 Trails & Tales. Previously considered extinct in the world of Minecraft, the sniffer was considered an ancient mob with the ability to find rare seeds. Thankfully, the community has brought this mob back to life and to get your own, you’ll be able to find sniffer eggs and hatch them. From there, you’ll have your own friendly baby sniffer to raise as you adore its cuteness. Once a sniffer is fully grown up, its botanist powers will start to kick in, as it begins sniffing out ancient seeds in the Overworld. After finding these new seeds, you can plant them to fill your Minecraft map with exciting, colorful, and unique decorative plants!
Camel – Rideable Mob for Two
On top of the mighty sniffer, another mob is joining the Minecraft update in the form of the majestic camel. With its long legs, the camel will have the ability to run and dash through Minecraft with speed, getting you from one location to another in a flash. If that wasn’t enough, with room for two players, you and your friend can ride on a camel together. From there, you and your friend can travel the Minecraft world, reaching new areas and exploring the many new features of the Minecraft update 1.20 !
New Biome – Minecraft Update 1.20 Cherry Blossom Biome
The exciting mobs being introduced in the Minecraft update Trails & Tales is just the start, with a brand-new biome also coming. Covered from head to toe with beautiful pink flowers, the Cherry Blossom Biome will be coming to all Minecraft servers soon. Inside this biome, Minecraft players will be able to discover cherry blossom trees covered with pink fluffy leaves. These beautiful trees even have the effect of drawing in three cute mobs, pigs, sheep, and bees. When the trees are broken down, players will also be able to take advantage of the full Cherry Blossom wood set, offering several new pink blocks to design with. Whether you plan to enjoy these new biomes or try the blocks on some unique buildings, the skies will limit what you can create with even more blocks in the Minecraft 1.20 update!
Even More Wood in Trails & Tales
If the new biome with Cherry Blossom wood wasn’t enough, there is a second new set of blocks being introduced in the update, bamboo wood. Bamboo will be found throughout the Minecraft world and when broken, the wood will be able to be crafted into a variety of new blocks. From beautiful mosaic blocks for decoration, lovely bamboo rafts, and even a full-fledged bamboo house. With another level of building and decorating in Minecraft, there is surely no bounds to what can be created on your own Minecraft game server!
Archaeology is Finally Here
Archaeology is a long-awaited feature that was first announced to be part of the Caves & Cliffs Minecraft update. After being delayed a few times, this gameplay mechanic is finally making its way to the Minecraft 1.20 update. Featuring the ability to perform actual archaeology in Minecraft, players will be able to use a brush on suspicious sand. This can will be found in ocean ruins, desert pyramids, and desert wells where players can find artifacts including sticks, emeralds, and 16 different types of pottery shards. From there, pottery shards can be combined to create decorated pots for your new sniffer plants!
Other New Blocks & Items
On top of all the exciting features already announced for the Minecraft 1.20 update, there will also be the introduction of a handful of blocks and items to take your Minecraft server hosting to the next level. Below, you can see all of the other new blocks & items coming to Minecraft Trails & Tales:
- Armor trims – Armor is seeing a big upgrade in style with armor trims, a new feature that allows you to customize the look of your armor. From iron armor with gold trim to diamond armor with iron trim, the possibilities will be endless!
- Hanging signs – Another level of depth has been added to signs with the ability to hang them with fence posts and chains. These will be great for leading players to new locations, showing off your newly built server shops, and more.
- Chiseled bookshelf – Have you ever wanted to store books you’ve written? Finally, Minecraft players worldwide will be able to store written books inside the new chiseled bookshelf block.
- Playable mob heads – Music is also flying into the new Minecraft 1.20 update in style with the introduction of musical mob heads. Combinable with music note blocks, players will be able to create a symphony of new music and sounds on their own server.

General Changes
- Colored wool, carpet blocks, and beds can now be dyed to any color
Technical Changes
- Added new damage types: outside_border and generic_kill
- Changes in server.properties encoding
- string data sources for the data command now accept negative boundaries, which are interpreted as index counted from the end of the string
Damage Types
- Players outside the world border are now hurt by the damage type outside_border instead of in_wall
- Forcibly removing an entity using i.e. the /kill command now uses damage type generic_kill instead of out_of_world
Loot Table Random Sequences
The game now uses named random sequences to deterministically produce loot for loot tables. Each random sequence produces a unique sequence based on the world seed and sequence ID, which means a loot table will produce the same results when run with the same parameters in the same world. The ID of the random sequence to use for a loot table is specified in a new field called random_sequence.
When will the Minecraft Update 1.20 Trails & Tales release?
At the moment, the official release date has not yet been confirmed by Mojang. We’re speculating it could most likely arrive this Summer. You can keep an eye out on our latest news, where we’ll announce as soon as the update is available to play on your own server!
Play the Minecraft Update 1.20 Snapshots & Prereleases
A pre-release version of Minecraft 1.20 is available now for your Minecraft client and you can try the update today before it fully releases. To begin enjoying the update, you can follow these steps:
- Open your Minecraft game launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Next, at the top, press the “Installations” option.
- From there, under “Versions”, ensure “Snapshots” is checked.
- Then, click the “New Installation” option in that same area.
- Using the dropdown, select a snapshot or prerelease for the Minecraft 1.20 update:
- Afterward, press “Create” to create that version on your Minecraft client.
- Lastly, go to the “Play” tab, select that version, and hit “Play” to try the update!
