How To Add Mods to Valheim

Modding your Valheim world adds new building pieces, quality-of-life tweaks, and entirely new content, once BepInEx and your files are set up correctly. In this Nitrado guide, we’ll show you how to install BepInExPack and add mods to your Valheim client, then match that mod list with your server and the rest of your group.

1. Install BepInExPack, since most Valheim mods rely on it to run. Thunderstore now recommends installing it through a mod manager such as Gale, r2modman, or the Thunderstore Mod Manager. If you prefer the manual route, download BepInExPack Valheim from Thunderstore and select Manual Download.
2. Open your Steam Library, right-click Valheim, and go to Manage > Browse local files.

1. Copy every file from the BepInExPack_Valheim folder into your local Valheim folder.

1. Download mod files from Nexus Mods, then drop each mod’s .dll file into the plugins folder inside BepInEx.

Mods and Multiplayer

Gameplay mods must match across the server and every player: the same mods, in matching versions, installed on each side. Purely cosmetic, client-only mods are the exception, since they never need a server install.

Most BepInEx mods don’t work over Valheim’s crossplay networking, so modded servers generally run with the Crossplay toggle off under Settings > General. That also means console players can’t join a modded server.

Consoles have no mod support at all: Xbox players can’t use mods today, and PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 players won’t be able to either once they join at the 1.0 launch. There’s no Steam Workshop for Valheim on any platform, so every mod install runs through BepInEx and files you manage yourself.
