    Player Control for Valheim

    Player Control for Valheim

Every Valheim server needs a way to keep the right players in and the wrong ones out, whether that’s a password at the door or admin rights for a trusted friend. In this Nitrado guide, we’ll show you how to manage player access on your Valheim server: the Server Password, the Ban list, the Permitted list, and the Admin list, and where you manage each one.

    Overview

Four controls manage who plays on your server. The Server Password sits under Settings > General in your Nitrado Web Interface. The Ban list and the Permitted list (also called the Whitelist) live under Tools > Player control, where you can add or remove a player directly from the page. The Admin list is a server file, adminlist.txt, which you edit under Settings > Config Files.

    Server Password

Your Server Password is the join password players need before they can connect. Set it under Settings > General in your Web Interface: the password needs a minimum of 5 characters, and it cannot be part of your server name.

Base settings in the Nitrado Web Interface with the Server Password field

Share the password only with the players you want on your server, since anyone who has it can attempt to join.

    Player Control

Open Tools > Player control in your Web Interface to manage the Ban list and the Permitted list from one page.

The Player control page under Tools in the Nitrado Web Interface

The page lists every player currently connected, plus anyone already on a list, with search options to help you find a specific name.

    Adding a Player

Select the Add player button to open the add-player window.

Enter the player’s ID into the Steam-ID field, choose the target list from the List dropdown, such as Whitelist or Banlist, then select Add.

For Steam players, that ID is their SteamID64, a long number a lookup site such as SteamID.io can find for you. More players are arriving from Xbox, PlayStation 5, and other platforms at the Valheim 1.0 launch, and moderation works the same way for them: use their Platform User ID in the format [Platform]_[User ID], case sensitive, read from the server log or the in-game F2 panel on PC (this begins with V_).

Important: Once the Permitted list has any entries, only players on that list can join your server. Add every player you want to keep before you add anyone to it, or you’ll lock out the rest of your community.

    Removing a Player

To remove a player from a list, find their row in the Player control table and use the controls in the Actions column.

    Admin Files

If you’d rather edit lists directly, the Ban list, Permitted list, and Admin list are stored as bannedlist.txt, permittedlist.txt, and adminlist.txt under Settings > Config Files. Admin rights only ever come from adminlist.txt.

    Hold the Hall

With your password set, your lists in order, and the Player control page ready for new arrivals, your hall is guarded against unwanted guests. Add your friends now, and moderation will already be waiting for them when they arrive at launch! For the file-editing steps and every admin command, see our guide on Valheim admin commands and controls.
