In Minecraft, there are several reasons why your adventure can take you to the depths of the sea. Whether you want to mine special blocks, find rare treasures, or fight against drowned people to grab a trident. Once you’re underwater in Minecraft, a breath indicator will appear. This indicator will show how long you can breathe underwater. Normally when you dive into the water, your character can only breathe underwater for 15 seconds. Below, we will show you how to extend your breathing timer to stay in the water longer.
To breathe underwater in Minecraft, you can use a Potion of Underwater Breathing. There are two types of Potions of Underwater Breathing. The normal version lets you breathe underwater for 3 minutes and the improved version lasts for 8 minutes. To get a Potion of Underwater Breathing, you can either make the potion in a brewing stand or gather it from killing witches and finding buried treasures.

To make a potion of underwater breathing, you will need a “Brewing Stand”, “Blaze Powder”, “Pufferfish“, and a “Strange Potion“. For the improved version, you need the normal potion of underwater breathing and a Redstone. You can use this guide to learn how to make a brewing stand to create potions on your dedicated Minecraft server.
Aside from making a potion, you can also add the “Respiration” enchantment to your Minecraft helmet. The Respiration enchantment increases the time you can breathe underwater by 15 seconds per level. If the enchantment is at level 3, you can breathe underwater for a total of 60 seconds.

To add the enchantment, you need an enchantment table or an anvil along with an enchantment book. If you use an enchantment table surrounded by books, you will need several items to accomplish the enchantment. Experience points that can be gathered by killing mobs and harvesting resources, the helmet, Lapis Luzili, and a bit of luck as the offered enchantments are randomized. Search for an enchantment that includes “Respiration” and then select that enchantment. Once selected, you’ll get your enchanted helmet back with the Respiration enchantment and you can now begin diving for longer in the oceans.

Speaking of helmets, there is a special helmet that can help you breathe underwater. This item is called the Turtle Shell Helmet. Wear it, this helmet extends the time you and your friends can breathe underwater by another 10 seconds. You can make this helmet from horn shields. You can get them when turtles grow into adults.
A Conduit is another block that can help on the mission towards how to breathe underwater in Minecraft. The Conduit block in Minecraft gives a “Conduit Power” effect to all players within 32 to 96 blocks of it, as long as they are in water or rain. Conduit Power provides the following effects:

To make a Conduit, you need several Nautilus Shells and a Heart of the Sea. A Heart of the Sea can be found in buried treasure, which you can locate by finding treasure maps in ocean ruins and shipwrecks. Nautilus Shells are found as a rare fishing drop, as mob loot from Drowned, and sometimes from Wandering traders that will sell one Nautilus Shell for 5 emeralds each.
To activate the Conduit, you need at least 16 Prismarine, Dark Prismarine, Prismarine Bricks, or Sea Lanterns. You place them in any combination in a ring-shaped frame with a distance of 1 block from the Conduit. Above, we have included what that activated Conduit will look like. With the Conduit active, you’ll now be able to swim freely without worry underwater!
Now that you know what options there are for staying underwater longer, what will you do with your new abilities? The sky sea is the limit!
