When experiencing Minecraft server lag, it is common to instantly assume that the server company is low quality. However, more often than not, the issues are caused by a few simple factors that can be checked to get your Minecraft server running as fast and reliably as possible. The first and most common reason why the Multicraft CPU is at 100% is plugins. Plugins are incredibly tricky to master, as they take time to figure out what will and won’t work with your unique server setup and plugin collection. When installing plugins, it is important to stop and start your server again to refresh it and allow the new plugins to take effect, in addition to the normal “reload” command. In many cases, this simple step resolves the issue.

If a simple server restart doesn’t solve your 100% CPU troubles, the problem could still be related to plugins. This time, make sure that all the plugins you have are the correct version. Sometimes, outdated or incompatible plugins can cause serious performance issues with your server. If you’re unfamiliar with a plugin, always research it before including it in your live server.

If all your plugins are the correct version, the issue could still be related to plugins! Now, check the configuration files of these plugins. This can usually be diagnosed by checking for console errors in Multicraft or manually reviewing your config.yml files and server.properties to ensure everything is working as expected. Remember, every setup is unique, so take your time and consider all the details. This isn’t just a game; this is a server to run a game, and it must be managed appropriately.

If after all this plugin work you are still experiencing lag, then chances are you have either a bad world (non-optimized blocks), a bad internet connection, a bad computer, or, most commonly, server issues such as insufficient RAM to run the number of plugins, world size, and slots you want. It’s true, plugins enhance the game, which is why advanced mod packs like Hexxit and Unleashed are so popular. However, these collections of plugins require significant processing power, usually more than you might expect. Craftbukkit needs at least 2GB to run and 1.5GB to run well. If you add 15-20 plugins, you’ll stress the CPU and potentially hit 100% usage. This will happen even faster if the slots are filled with a lot of players connected.

When this happens, you have two options: either go through your plugins and remove the ones you don’t need, or upgrade your server RAM to handle the awesome server you really want to create.
