INTRODUCTION TO HOW TO INSTALL SHADERS IN MINECRAFT

Minecraft contains many worlds, each packed with excitement and beauty. GETTING STARTED – SHADERS IN MINECRAFT

When installing shaders in Minecraft, shaders require a mod tool called OptiFine. OptiFine works to add not only support for shaders but also an extensive list of optimizations to your settings that help to improve the way your Minecraft game runs. These OptiFine optimizations are fantastic for players who have trouble running Minecraft on their PC.

The OptiFine mod is added by using one of two methods, an automatic installer or installing OptiFine manually. No matter the method you prefer, you can find the steps below to install OptiFine and get shaders added to your Minecraft game.

INSTALLING OPTIFINE AUTOMATICALLY

1. Begin by downloading the version of OptiFine that you need off the OptiFine website. OptiFine currently supports versions from Minecraft 1.7.2 up to the latest version.
2. Once you have located that version, press the “Download” option.
   
3. After OptiFine is downloaded, run the .jar file on your computer to open an automatic OptiFine installer. This installer will add OptiFine to your Minecraft game.
   
   • OPTIFINE INSTALLER NOT RUNNING?
     If you cannot run OptiFine as a program, right-click on the OptiFine file and go to “Open with”. Open the OptiFine file with the program “Java(TM) Platform SE binary” to start the installer.
     OptiFine will install. Once finished, you will get the message “OptiFine is successfully installed.”
4. With OptiFine installed, open your Minecraft game launcher.
5. In the Minecraft game launcher, use the version selection dropdown and ensure that the version of OptiFine you installed is selected, and then press “PLAY”.
   
6. OptiFine will now be installed and you’re now ready to install shaders to Minecraft.

INSTALLING OPTIFINE MANUALLY WITH FORGE

1. Start by heading to the Forge website and downloading the latest recommended version of Forge for the version of Minecraft you’re using. In our example, we’re downloading the latest recommended version of Forge for Minecraft version 1.19.2.
   
2. Run the Forge .jar installer, select “Install client”, and then press “OK” to begin the installation.
   
   • FORGE INSTALLER NOT RUNNING?
     If the Forge installer is not running, right-click on the Forge file and go to “Open with”. Open the Forge installer file with the program “Java(TM) Platform SE binary” to start the installer.
3. After Forge is installed, start the Minecraft launcher. In the version dropdown, select the Forge version you installed.
   
4. Once selected, start Minecraft until you reach the main menu and then close the game. This will generate a “mods” folder for your Minecraft game to allow you to install OptiFine.
5. To find that “mods” folder, do the following:
   1. Open Minecraft and, at the main menu, select “Singleplayer”.
   2. In Singleplayer, select one of your worlds and then press “Edit” at the bottom.
   3. Then press the “Open World Folder” option to be brought to your Minecraft files.
   4. From there, use your PC’s file navigation to go back in those folders to the “.minecraft” folder like this:
      
   5. You will now see the “mods” folder in that area along with all of your other main Minecraft files.
6. Next, download the latest version of OptiFine from the OptiFine website for the Minecraft Forge version you’re running. For example, if you’re running Forge version 1.19.2, you’ll need OptiFine version 1.19.2.
7. After downloading OptiFine, upload that mod file to your Minecraft “mods” folder like this.
   
8. Finally, start Minecraft just like you did in step 3. You will now have Forge and the OptiFine mod enabled on your Minecraft game!

HOW TO INSTALL SHADERS IN MINECRAFT

1. Start the OptiFine version on your Minecraft game.
2. At the main menu of Minecraft, head to your “Options…” and then “Video Settings…”.
   
3. In your Video Settings, click the “Shaders…” option, and then at the bottom left, click on “Shaders Folder”. This will open the Shaders folder where you can install Minecraft shaders.
   
4. Next, find and download the shader you’d like to use. Shaders should always download as .zip files containing all of the shader files.
   
   • Shaders often feature different downloads including Lite versions and Extreme versions. Lite versions will run on low-performance PCs while more Extreme shader pack versions will need a strong computer to run properly.
5. Once downloaded, upload that shader .zip file into the Shaders folder.
6. That shader will now appear in your Minecraft “Shaders” section in the Minecraft game. Click on that shader to activate it and then press “Done” in the Shaders menu.
   
7. After selecting that shader pack, you’ll now be ready to join your worlds and Minecraft servers to experience the shader pack firsthand!
