The world of Minecraft often features wonder and mystery during block explorations. Witches, magical biomes like the Deep Dark, and item enchantments are just some of the magic encountered in Minecraft. Another mysterious item of Minecraft that is quite useful, the potion, offers a whole new type of effect to the game. Literally!
Potions are an item that can be made in Minecraft with a few simple ingredients in a brewing stand and offer a plethora of benefits! Looking to get a quick bit of health, better movement speed, or a deadly potion to use in PvP? All of that and more is possible through Minecraft potions! Get your tools ready and prepare as you learn the requirements of brewing potions and how you can make potions on your own Minecraft game server!
Before beginning with creating Minecraft potions, base ingredients are needed. Base ingredients are the starter for creating potions, proving the base for how that potion will turn out. The chart below includes a list of base ingredients used to create potions, what potions will be created, and the effects those will have so that you can easily begin making a potion.
ITEM NAME | ITEM | POTION CREATED | EFFECTS |
---|---|---|---|
Dragon’s Breath | ![]() |
Lingering Water Bottle | Usable to turn splash potions into lingering potions. |
Fermented Spider Eye | ![]() |
Potion of Weakness | Results in the potion becoming corrupted, changing its effect. |
Glowstone Dust | ![]() |

The corruption effect caused by a fermented spider eye will reverse the effects currently on the potion in most cases. For example, if a healing potion is corrupted, this can result in a Potion of Harming. Some potions, such as enhanced versions of the Leaping and Swiftness potions cannot become corrupted.
Once you have an Awkward Potion in hand, you’re ready to design a potion. Awkward potions can be combined with many different ingredients to add unique effects and upgrades to your potions.

Many potions can be turned into splash potions and used against mobs in battle. Fighting undead mobs brings a slight reversal effect to potions. Unlike normal mobs, healing potions will cause undead mobs to take damage while harming potions will heal them. Additionally, poison and regeneration potions do not affect undead mobs.
Minecraft features two potions that currently cannot be brewed. The potions that you cannot make include the Potion of Luck from Java Edition and the Potion of Decay from Bedrock Edition. While you can’t create these potions, when using commands or creative mode in Minecraft, you can obtain and use them to your advantage!
When running your own Minecraft server, you can add these unique potions through custom kits or item prizes. Adding these potions can be achieved by installing plugins or mods on your server. No matter what method you create for players to get these potions, they’ll add a lot of fun to the already amazing adventure on your server!
Minecraft potions has been an essential item in Minecraft since the start of version 1.0.0 released in November 2011. Before the use of the brewing stand to create mighty potions, the cauldron had been the initial block used to make potions. Due to the cauldron potion system being rather complicated, with the lack of GUI and issues with duplicate potions, Notch and Jeb at Mojang came up with a new brewing method. Through their hard work, this new system used the brewing stand, creating the current method of making potions in Minecraft!
In a game that already has endless creativity, adding potions to the mix brings a new level of fun and engagement. The enjoyment of potions comes in many forms, whether players are taking potions into battle to give themselves positive effects and the opponents’ negative effects, or they’re simply looking to improve their speed to travel great distances.
Since potions can be complicated and require different items, the charts above will ensure you can create the perfect potions to use in the game. Now that you know how to make potions in Minecraft, get started by creating some custom potions on your Minecraft server!
