How to Set Difficulty on Minecraft Servers

How to Set Difficulty on Minecraft Servers

When preparing for an awesome journey with friends on your Minecraft server, setting the difficulty is one aspect that cannot be ignored. Whether you prefer a peaceful or chaotic adventure, you have the ability to shape your experience. If you want strong enemies, then choosing the hard difficulty would be your best bet. On the other hand, you can select easy mode for a smoother experience. Regardless of which one you choose, we’ll be showing you how to set difficulty in your Minecraft server with this Nitrado tutorial. Let’s get started!

    Difficulty Levels

The following is a list of all difficulty levels in Minecraft, which will come in handy when setting the mode for your server. Keep in mind that “Hardcore” is labeled differently than these levels. If you want to enable that gamemode, then do that by editing the server properties.

    • Peaceful: No enemies appear naturally. If you use an egg or command to spawn them, they vanish instantly. Your health regenerates quickly, but hazards like falling into lava can still kill you if your health hits zero. The hunger bar remains full, and switching to Peaceful from a harder difficulty will remove all hostile and neutral mobs.
    • Easy: Enemies spawn but are less dangerous, dealing lighter damage compared to Normal or Hard. If your hunger runs out, your health will only drop to 5 hearts. Specific threats like Cave Spider poison and Zombies breaking doors don’t occur. Enemy attacks deal about 0.5 to 1 heart of damage.
    • Normal: Enemies are tougher, inflicting 1 to 1.5 hearts of damage. If hunger fully depletes, your health drops to just 0.5 hearts. Some mobs, like Vindicators, can break down doors.
    • Hard: Enemies hit harder than on Normal, and if your hunger bar empties, you’ll eventually starve to death. Zombies can also break wooden doors, making survival more challenging.

    Changing Difficulties in Minecraft

The process to change your difficulty is extremely simple, as it only requires you to run a command. However, you must become a Minecraft server operator beforehand. Follow the steps below to learn how to do that and set your ideal difficulty level.

    1. Head towards your Nitrado web-interface, then select Tools > Live Server Console on the left.

    2. Type “op [player]” with your Minecraft username.
      E.g. op User123

    3. Join the server and run the following command: /difficulty [mode]
Modes include: peaceful, easy, normal, and hard.

    4. You’re finished! The world’s difficulty is what you’ve selected.

Alternatively, you can run the difficulty command from the Live Server Console instead.

    Peaceful or Hard Adventures?

It all depends on what type of Minecraft server adventure you want with friends. Whether you want no mobs to spawn or have exciting challenges, these difficulty modes determine that. Choose wisely and if it’s too hard or too easy, simply change the level. If you’re looking for a more advanced difficulty, consider using Hardcore or installing plugins / mods to amplify the experience. Skies are the limits, as they say – so invite friends and have a wonderful time in Minecraft!
