Minecraft Commands List & Usage Guide

How to Use Minecraft Commands | List & Usage

Did you ever want to go beyond basic crafting and building in Minecraft? By using commands you can instantly change the time of day, teleport a lost player home, or clear out a mob infestation lagging the game. In this Nitrado guide, we break down how to use Minecraft commands to manage your server. You gain absolute authority over your environment by mastering these tools.

Enabling Commands on Your Nitrado Server

Before typing anything in the chat box, the server needs to recognise your authority. Standard players cannot run administrative actions by default. You need Operator status.

    1. Open your Nitrado web interface.
    2. Navigate to Settings > General and verify command blocks are active.
    3. Navigate to Tools > Player Control.
    4. Find your username and grant OP rights.
    5. Restart the server to apply the changes.

    Understanding Command Syntax

Every input starts with a forward slash (/). The game reads this slash and knows you want to execute an action rather than send a chat message. Arguments follow the base text to specify exactly what happens. For example typing /time set day tells the server the exact state you want. But leaving off the arguments like /time set often returns an error.

Pro Tip: Press the Tab key while typing in the chat box to auto-complete player names, commands, and command values.

    Target Selectors

Target selectors apply actions to specific groups of entities instantly. When your mob farm breaks, you can use something like /kill @e[type=zombie] (or any other hostile mobs) to clear the lag.

    • @p: Targets the nearest player.
    • @r: Targets a random player.
    • @a: Targets all players.
    • @e: Targets all entities (players, mobs, dropped items).
    • @s: Targets the player/entity executing the action.

    Essential Server Administrator Commands

Minecraft features hundreds of commands covering everything from advanced data tags to complex particle effects. Copying every single command creates an unreadable wall of text. You can find the complete unedited lists on the Minecraft Wiki.

Instead of cluttering your screen, we curated the absolute most critical server management commands you need to moderate players and maintain server stability.

Universal Admin Commands (Java and Bedrock)

These core administrative functions work across all versions of the game.

    Command Usage Description
    /kick /kick <player> Removes a player from the server.
/ban /ban <player> Prevents a player from rejoining the server.
    /pardon /pardon <player> Removes a ban from a player.
    /op /op <player> Grants operator permissions.
    /deop /deop <player> Removes operator permissions.
    /whitelist on /whitelist on Enables whitelist-only access.
    /whitelist off /whitelist off Disables whitelist-only access.
/whitelist add /whitelist add <player> Adds a player to the whitelist.
/whitelist remove /whitelist remove <player> Removes a player from the whitelist.
/whitelist list /whitelist list Shows the current whitelist.
/list /list Shows who is currently online.
    /say /say <message> Broadcasts a server message.
    /tp /tp <target> <destination> Teleports players to a location or another player.
    /gamemode /gamemode <mode> [player] Changes a player’s game mode.
    /give /give <player> <item> [amount] Gives items to a player.
    /time /time set <value> Changes the in-game time.
    /weather /weather <clear|rain|thunder> Changes the weather.
    /kill /kill <target> Kills a player or entity.
/gamerule /gamerule <rule> <value> Changes common world rules like keepInventory or mobGriefing.

    Using Command Blocks

Typing actions manually works for simple tasks. So players rely on command blocks for complex automation. These specialized blocks execute inputs when powered by Redstone. You cannot craft them. You must use /give @s command_block to obtain one. Placing one down and right-clicking it opens a menu where you assign specific tasks, set activation conditions, and link multiple blocks together into chains.

    Command Your Server Console

Running your own Nitrado server gives you the exact tools you need to shape the world. Commands strip away the normal limits of survival mode. You can build massive structures, create custom scenarios, or just keep the rain away from your building site. Take these tools and build something massive.
