    How To OP Someone in Minecraft

    How to Op Someone in Minecraft – Introduction

    On a Minecraft server, you and your friends will journey with others in amazing worlds. During those journeys, you can collect resources, battle dangerous mobs, and build magnificent homes. While playing, you may encounter issues where you can’t find resources, or even worse, a player might be trying to destroy others’ server creations. This can thankfully be avoided by learning how to op someone in Minecraft to access admin commands on your server.

    In Minecraft, Op is a role that can be given to any player on your server and provides access to every command and permission available. Due to this, we recommend that Op should only be given to yourself and your most trusted friends. Once a player is Op, you’ll gain access to commands to manage players, fly, teleport, and more. Alongside having access to all regular Minecraft commands, if you have any plugins or mods they’ll be able to use those commands too. In this guide, we will show you how to Op yourself and others on your server to use commands on your Minecraft server!

    Getting Started with Op in Minecraft

    How to Give Someone Op in Minecraft via Commands

      1. Head to your Minecraft server webinterface and ensure your server is turned on.
      2. Then, to the left under “Tools”, select “Live Server Console”.
      3. Within the Live Server Console, you can now type the command “op USERNAME” to Op someone in Minecraft.

      • If you have a Minecraft Bedrock server, the Op command is slightly different since players can set usernames with spaces in them. You can Op a player in Minecraft Bedrock using the command “op “USER NAME”” with quotation marks around the name.

    Once you’re Op on a server, you’ll gain the ability to then use the /op USERNAME command directly in-game to give Op to other players. In addition to giving someone Op in Minecraft through commands, it’s possible to set them manually in the file and to edit the permissions of an Op player. Below, we’ll show you how to access and edit your Op Minecraft files!

    Giving a Player Op Manually Within the Files

    The process for giving a player Op manually differs between Minecraft versions 1.7.8 and below, and Minecraft 1.7.9 and above. This is due to changes made to these files in 1.7.9. In version 1.7.8 and lower, Ops are set in the ops.txt file. Within all other versions above 1.7.8, the ops.json file is used to edit and handle Op levels. In the sections below, we’ll cover how to set Ops depending on your Minecraft server’s version.

    Version 1.7.8 and Below

      1. On your Minecraft server webinterface, stop your server.
      2. Next, on the left below “Tools”, click on “File Browser”.
      3. Inside your server files access the “minecraft” folder, locate the ops.txt file, and click to edit it.
      4. While editing this file, to Op someone in Minecraft you can add their username, one name per line, to give them Op.

    1. After adding all of the users you’d like to make an admin, press “Save changes” and start your Minecraft server. They’ll now be assigned as an Op upon joining the server!

    Version 1.7.9 and Above

    1. Go to your Minecraft server webinterface and stop your server.
    2. After, look to the left side under “Tools” and press “File Browser”.
    3. In your Minecraft server files, click the “minecraft” folder, find the ops.json file, and click to edit it.
    4. The format of the ops.json file is more complex and will require every line to be correct to function on your server. Below, we have included an example ops.json file with two players added to it:
      [
      {
      "uuid": "5c27674c-bad8-45e0-9f3e-82bc3ec39200",
      "name": "Nitrado",
      "level": 4
      },
      {
      "uuid": "5c27674c-bad8-45e0-9f3e-82bc3ec39200",
      "name": "Peter",
      "level": 4
      }
      ]
    5. You can now adjust those users’ Op levels in the “level” option. 4 is the default level.
    6. Lastly, once all users have been added you can press “Save changes” and start your Minecraft server.

    Since the ops.json file can be difficult to edit manually, it’s often recommended to Op someone in Minecraft using commands. From there, you can then edit the ops.json file to change the levels of each user.

    Op Levels on a Minecraft Server

    Inside the Op files for a Minecraft server above version 1.7.9, it is possible to set specific Ops levels. You can see what each Op level can do underneath:

    • 1 = Ignore spawn-protection
    • 2 = Rights for /clear, /difficulty, /effect, /gamemode, /gamerule, /give, /tp and the use of command blocks.
    • 3 = Rights for /ban, /deop, /kick, and /op.
    • 4 = Access to all commands. (including /stop)

    Manage Your Perfect Minecraft Server

    Now that you have Operator, along with others on your server, you’ll be ready to handle anything and everything. Whether you need to spawn in an item, ban a player, or stop your server before making more edits on your server webinterface. With full control, you and your friends can focus on creating and enjoying the perfect Minecraft server experience!
