Oil is a crucial resource in the world of ARK: Survival Ascended, as it allows you to create gasoline, a vital fuel for the more advanced stages of the game. It’s also used as an ingredient for crafting items like grenades, soap, vaults, and other objects. That’s why we consider it essential to know the best places and methods to obtain this valuable resource. This guide focuses on The Island map, but we will also highlight important points for The Center and Scorched Earth maps.
The list of locations we provide below mainly consists of large areas where you can gather this precious resource. These zones are the friendliest and safest for collecting Oil. In ARK: Survival Ascended, finding oil rocks in the ocean is no longer as viable because they are located in very deep zones. That’s why the following locations are on land or in shallow waters, extracting oil from corals. Without further ado, let’s dive into the main farming areas and their characteristics.
Although located far north, the northern beach of the snow zone on the map is an excellent resource hub, especially for Oil. This area has few creatures, making it a relatively peaceful extraction. All you need is an iron pickaxe to harvest it in large quantities. However, if you want to be even more efficient, we recommend bringing an Ankylosaurus, as it will make material collection easier.
Starting at the mentioned coordinates and moving east, you will find a large number of Oil rocks scattered along the beach. As you progress along the coast and near the small icebergs, you will discover many oil veins, extending up to a stone arch located at coordinates “Latitude 27.7 Longitude 7.5”.
On this small island in the top left corner of the map, you will find a significant number of oil rocks. It’s a small area, and you’ll need a flying dino to access all the nodes easily. But the effort will be rewarded with large amounts of oil, both safely and quickly.
South of the herbivore island are the most superficial oil rocks. There used to be more, but in Ascended, this changed, and oil rocks are now only found in the deep sea. That’s why these shallow ones are special.
These rocks are usually scattered in deep-sea zones. Reaching them is a challenge, not only because of the oxygen and special suit your character will need but also due to the constant attacks from aggressive creatures lurking in the depths.
On the tropical coastlines, you can find these corals, which are dark with blue hues when they reflect sunlight. These curious corals can give you oil when destroyed. They are located in very shallow waters, making them an excellent early source of oil for your base. Below are some points where it will be easier to find these corals and collect the precious resource.
Another point to consider when collecting this resource is that having a mount that helps with gathering will make the process much more fruitful. One of the best mounts for this task is the Ankylosaurus. To get the most out of your mount, you’ll need to upgrade at least 650 points in melee and a few in oxygen. These upgrades will allow your Anky to withstand being underwater and efficiently mine rocks.
This point is in the southern part of the map, very close to a starting zone. Here, you’ll find yourself in shallow waters in a small bay with special corals. You won’t be attacked by sharks here, thanks to the shallow waters. However, you’ll need to watch out for piranhas, raptors, and other land creatures that roam the area.
If you don’t mind fighting sharks, you can take the outer part of this small peninsula by following the reef. Starting at the mentioned coordinates and moving parallel to the beach until “Latitude 87.3 Longitude 30.8”. In this entire area, you will find a large number of oil corals.
At this position, you’ll find a small lagoon within an island, also very close to a starting zone. This lagoon is surrounded by high stone walls, so there is only one entrance. Inside, no creatures will appear to attack you. Here, you can find plenty of coral to harvest without interruptions. Additionally, outside the island to the south, you will find a good amount of blue corals to collect. In this coastal area, be careful not to stray too far from the shore, as sharks or other marine creatures could attack you.
This resource is not only obtained from minerals and corals in the environment but also from certain creatures like the Dung Beetle, Basilosaurus, or Trilobite. Although these methods are much slower than direct mineral collection, they are much more consistent and require little effort once you have the creatures. Now we will describe how to obtain this resource from each of these creatures.
With the Dung Beetle, simply enclose the creature and set it to “wander” mode, and it will automatically generate oil every time it collects poop, providing a constant source of oil in your base. You can have several of these beetles around your other creatures in your base for a steady supply of oil.
This marine creature passively generates oil in its inventory. Although it can be difficult to tame, once you succeed, it will constantly reward you with oil. If you manage to set up a small farm of Basilosauruses, you can increase oil production at your marine base.
This peculiar crustacean, which only appears in the mornings in the southern part of the map, will provide oil when killed. Although finding these creatures is quite situational, you can obtain oil and other valuable resources like pearls or black pearls by harvesting their carcasses.
Oil is a resource that becomes vital as the game progresses, which is why knowing these points and methods to obtain oil will help you take the next step in improving your base. Here you will find not only the best places to collect oil when you’re just starting but also important points and tips to maximize your gathering time.
