How to Set Up an Economy on Your Minecraft Server

How to Set Up an Economy on Your Minecraft Server

When you’re creating a Minecraft server, an economy might be required for your setup. Whether you’re setting up Factions, Skyblock, or something else – economies play an important role in progression for players. Many users want to be the richest or simply have enough money to purchase goods. This is particularly true for servers with custom items that aren’t easily obtainable. In this Nitrado guide, we’ll show you how to create an economy on your Minecraft server!

    Best Minecraft Economy Plugins

For the vast majority of economy plugins, Vault API is required as a dependency. If a plugin isn’t working properly, make sure to install this API. Besides that, review our list of the best economy plugins below to get started.

    Plugin Name Description
EssentialsX It features a highly popular, built-in digital currency system integrated directly into a comprehensive suite of essential server management commands.
EconomyShopGUI This plugin adds an intuitive graphical interface that allows players to easily buy and sell items directly through customizable server menus.
TheNewEconomy It provides a highly versatile multi-currency framework that allows server owners to seamlessly implement both digital balances and physical items as valid tender.
ChestShop It enables a completely player-driven marketplace by allowing users to set up automated transaction stalls using simple signs and storage chests.

    Economy Setup

Creating your own economy in Minecraft can involve lots of work, depending on what you want. We’ll quickly and briefly showcase basic setups to do this on your server. Keep in mind that some steps might require you to use the Nitrado Web Interface to access plugin files.

We recommend becoming a server operator if you aren’t already, as commands will be required.

    EssentialsX

    • Edit its main config file to adjust economy settings from the File Browser.
    • You can also create signs in-game for players to buy or sell items.
    • Use the /eco command to manage player economies.

More information about EssentialsX can be found here. This plugin is typically used in combination with other plugins, as it’s primarily a foundation for more advanced setups. An example would be using Factions + EssentialsX so players can purchase land claims and more.

    EconomyShopGUI

    • Use the /eshop command to create and manage the global shop for players.
    • E.g. /eshop additem [section] [material] [buy price] [sell price]
    • Players will use the /shop and /sellall commands to buy or sell items.

For a full list of commands, check the plugin’s description on Spigot or visit the wiki. This is a standalone plugin that includes a fully customizable shop for everyone on the Minecraft server. The only requirement is Vault or another economy API.

    TheNewEconomy

    • Use the main /myeco command to get started, creating new currencies.
    • Begin to configure your economy, which can be linked with other plugins.
    • The /money command can be used to make deposits or withdrawals.

This plugin is effectively a tool to enhance the economy, as it can introduce digital currencies, item-based trading, or a blend of both. It’s best used for multiple currencies on your Minecraft server, such as money vouchers and gold ingots representing cash. Learn more about this here!

    ChestShop

    • Place a sign on the chest, then write the amount, buy and sell amount, and item type.
    • E.g. “B 10 : S 5”, buying for 10 and selling for 5 dollars.
    • Items must be inside of the chest for players to purchase them.
    • Use /iteminfo to get information about the item in your hand.

In the plugin’s description on Bukkit, it references in-game examples of creating these signs. Refer to them if you need assistance, along with other information like commands and permissions. This is a player-focused economy plugin that enables them to create their own shops.

    Your Own Minecraft Economy

There are tons of economy plugins available to install on your Minecraft server, with some offering more features than others. We’ve covered the best of the best to implement and enhance an economy. Keep in mind that you should double-check dependencies, as Vault is typically required for most – but isn’t entirely necessary for some. It all depends on what your setup is like!
