How to Set Up Anti-Grief Protection on a Minecraft Server

How to Set Up Anti-Grief Protection on a Minecraft Server

Building a masterpiece in Minecraft takes hours of dedication, but it only takes a few seconds for a rogue player to undo all that hard work. When you open your world to the public, the risk of griefing can turn into a source of frustration. Taking control of your environment ensures that your community can build, explore, and collaborate without fear. In this Nitrado guide, we will show you how to implement the best anti-griefing tools available, helping you create a safe and welcoming space for every player who joins.

    Anti-Grief Plugins

    Plugin Name Description
CoreProtect Logs every block change, item interaction, and command, allowing admins to instantly roll back damage.
GriefPrevention Lets players claim land using a golden shovel to prevent others from building, breaking, or stealing.
WorldGuard Allows admins to protect large areas (like spawns) by disabling PvP, block breaking, and explosion damage.
Lands A modern, menu-based land claiming plugin that makes managing permissions easy for players (premium plugin).
LWC Extended Allows players to lock individual chests, doors, and furnaces to prevent theft.

Once you download one or more plugins, install them on your Nitrado server.

    Grief Protection for Spawns

WorldGuard is your best bet when it comes to protecting spawns, hubs, or other areas. This allows you to completely control what goes on in the protected field, such as mob spawning or block interaction. You can also pair this up with CoreProtect, just as extra protection.

    1. With OP permissions, enter the //wand command on your Minecraft server.
    2. Right-click the first position of your protected area, then left-click the other position.
    3. Afterwards, run the //expand vert command to protect from bedrock level to height limit.
    4. Now use /rg define [name] to create the protected region for your area.
    5. If successful, you can run /rg flag [name] to configure the anti-grief protection.

For more information, visit our dedicated WorldGuard guide.

    Protection for Players

GriefPrevention or Lands are two amazing plugins that allow players to protect their own builds. Users will be able to select the area they want, then claim it as their own land. They can begin to edit its settings via commands and even allow other players to have access to the area. You can pair this with CoreProtect and Lockette / LWC for extra protection.

With any plugin, you will need to ensure players have the right permissions to use commands and features. We recommend using LuckPerms to set that up. To find specific permissions from your plugin, check its documentation or official page to find that out.

    GriefPrevention Setup

    1. Players need to have a Golden Shovel to begin claiming their land.
    2. Right-click one corner and left-click the opposite corner with the shovel.
    3. This will instantly claim the land as theirs, meaning it’s now protected.
    4. They can use /trust [player] to allow someone else to access their region.

For more commands, visit the official wiki for GriefPrevention.

    Lands Setup

    1. The player must find a chunk they want to claim in-game.
    2. Once found, run the /lands selection command to receive the special item.
    3. Right-click one corner, then left-click the opposite corner with the item.
    4. The region will be protected and you’ll be able to run various commands to edit it.

Keep in mind that this plugin is premium (paid). Documentation can be found here.

    Protect Your World!

These are the best anti-grief protection plugins in Minecraft, but there are many others available online. We recommend GriefPrevention for players, as this is a free plugin with a simple straightforward setup. When it comes to admins, definitely use WorldGuard since that’s the best option to protect spawns and other server structures. Make sure to test around too, invite friends and fine-tune your regions.
