How To Make a Pixelmon Server

How to Make a Pixelmon Server – Introduction

In Minecraft, players are taken through hundreds of unique worlds including modded worlds. Of those modded worlds, players can see everything from deadly dragons to volcano caves and even full overhauls of mobs. One such overhaul that brings back the childhoods of many players is the Pixelmon server mod for Minecraft, bringing Pokemon to the game!

The Pixelmon mod is no stranger to most Minecraft players, having been around since 2012. Becoming extremely popular in a short time, the Pixelmon mod continued to grow with more Pokemon and an ever-evolving community behind it. The original mod was discontinued in 2017 but shortly after, was then continued with Pixelmon Reforged and Pixelmon Generations. There are now 908 Pokemon in Pixelmon to discover, covering generations 1 through 8 and the gen 9 starters with updates continuing to come. Are you ready to catch them all with your friends and fellow Pixelmon trainers?

Pixelmon can take quite a few steps to install, leading to a complicated setup. To help break the installation down, we’ll show you each step from making a server to adding Pixelmon to your game. Afterward, you and your friends will be able to jump on your own Pixelmon server to enjoy the world of Pokemon!

    1. Head to your Minecraft server webinterface and stop your server.
    2. Next, on the left side of the webinterface, click “SWITCH GAME”.

    4. Upon pressing install, a dropdown will appear. Use the dropdown to search for and find “Pixelmon”. Ensure you select and install the correct version that you wish to run on your server, either 1.12.2 or 1.16.5.
      finding and installing Pixemon Minecraft
    5. After selecting Pixelmon, press “Install” once more to confirm the installation. Pixelmon will now install on your Minecraft game server!
    6. Once Pixelmon is installed on your server, it’s essential to know that optional mods are also installed with the Pixelmon mod. These optional mods include BYG, ExplorersCompass, NaturesCompass, and JourneyMap. These mods will either need to be removed from your server or installed on your Minecraft game to ensure they work.
      • If you’re planning to remove them, on the left of your Minecraft server webinterface you can click “File Browser” to access your files. From there, go to the location /minecraftftb/mods. In the “mods” folder, delete the files for each of those mods. Lastly, exit your File Browser and restart your server.

You can now start your Minecraft server to enjoy Pixelmon. Like other mods, Pixelmon will also need to be installed on your game to work. If you do not already have Pixelmon installed on your Minecraft game, you can follow the instructions below to install it!

    CurseForge Launcher for Installing Pixelmon

When it comes to playing Pixelmon on your Minecraft game client, one of the easiest ways to set up and play the mod is on the CurseForge launcher. CurseForge can automatically install Pixelmon and keep it up-to-date. Then, when you are ready to play you can simply hit play on the Pixelmon Reforged modpack without any other extra installations or add-ons. You can install and use the CurseForge Launcher to play Pixelmon by using this guide!

Manual Game Installation of the Pixelmon Mod

Before you can install the Pixelmon Reforged mod manually, you’ll need Minecraft: Java Edition which supports Minecraft mods. Using the default launcher, we’ll be showing you how to add Forge to run mods and then how to install Pixelmon.

    Installing Forge to your Game
      1. Firstly, you’ll need to ensure that Java is up-to-date on your computer. Since Minecraft is written in Java including its game logic, rendering, and networking, Java will need always to remain updated alongside the game. You can find the latest version of Java’s automatic installer and updater here. After downloading, you can click the program to start installing/updating Java on your computer.
      2. With Java updated, it’s now time to download and install Forge. You can download Forge on the MinecraftForge.net website. Once you have found the correct version to download, click the “Installer” option to download an automatic installer.
Minecraft Forge 1.16.5 download for your game
        • If you’re running a server, it’ll be essential to download the same version of Forge that your server is running. For example, if your server is running Forge 1.19.2 – 43.2.0, you would need that same version on your Minecraft game.
      1. Upon downloading Forge, run that program to begin installing it.
        • If the Forge installer does not open, you can right-click that file, hover over “Open with”, and click “Java(™) Platform SE binary” to open the file as normal.
      2. Next, in the installer, ensure that “Install client” is selected and then press “OK”. After a few moments, Forge will now be installed on your Minecraft game.

      1. To load Forge on your Minecraft game after it is installed, open Minecraft: Java Edition and use the version dropdown to select that Forge version.

How to Download Pixelmon and Install It
      1. With Forge installed, you’ll need to download the correct version of Pixelmon for that Forge version. You can find and download the Pixelmon mod on reforged.gg. The version you’ll need to download will depend on the Forge version you’re running(1.12.2 or 1.16.5).
how to download the Pixelmon mod
      1. Similar to before, if you’re running a server the Pixelmon mod will need to be the same version that’s installed on your server. Otherwise, you’ll experience a mod version mismatch error. If you’re unsure, you can also download the Pixelmon mod file directly from your server files in the FTP.
      2. After downloading Pixelmon, you’ll need to get into your Minecraft game files. To do this, we recommend first opening Minecraft on the Forge version you installed and starting Minecraft by pressing the “Play” button.
      3. Once in the main menu of Minecraft, press “Options”, “Resource Packs…”, and “Open Pack Folder” to be brought to your game files.
      4. You should see your folder navigation bar inside that “resourcepacks” folder at the top. Once you see that, click “.minecraft” in that bar to go to the main directory of your game files. The main directory is where you’ll see all of your game folders and files.
how to access the main Minecraft files
      1. Next, in those files find the “mods” folder and then click to enter that.
    locating the Minecraft mods folder
      1. Afterward, locate the Pixelmon .jar file you downloaded from step #1 and place that inside the mods folder like this:
installing Pixelmon for your game and Pixemon Server
    1. Finally, after adding that mod file you can exit the files and start Minecraft once more on that 1.12.2 or 1.16.5 Forge version. Pixelmon will now load on your game!
    Pixelmon Side Mods

Alongside the Pixelmon Reforged mod, several side mods can also be downloaded and installed. These mods add everything from teams to better Pokedex, economies, money, and more. Side mods are installed just like how the Pixelmon mod was added above, however, you can also follow our our Minecraft mod guide to install them. Here are a few of the mods you can add for more Pixelmon server fun:

      • Wonder Trade – Based on the wonder trade feature from Pokemon X and Y, a pool of Pokemon are available with random trading, both based on the server config and what other players are offering. When you perform a wonder trade, you’ll send off one of your Pokemon in return for a random pokemon.

      • Poke Tracker – Some Pokemon can elude players when trying to catch them all. To combat this, the Poke Tracker mods allow players to see the most recent Pokemon spawns through a GUI and track them.

    • Pixelmon Bingo – A minigame in Pixelmon, bingo gives each player on the server a card with 28 Pokemon listed. Players are then given the next 24 hours to fill out their card by catching Pokemon and are given rewards for each one caught. If a player fills in one of their bingo lines with the Pokemon on their card, they are rewarded nicely!

How to Join a Pixelmon Server

    1. Begin by starting your Minecraft game client with Pixelmon installed to it.
    2. Once you’re at the main menu of Minecraft, press “Multiplayer”.
    3. Then, click the “Add Server” option to add your server and set the following options:
    4. Minecraft add server option
      • Server Name – This option can be set to any name.
      • Server Address – Add your server’s full IP address and port here.
    5. Lastly, press “Done”, find that server in your list, and click it twice to start joining the server! If you experience any issues while joining, you can follow our “Common Pixelmon Issues” section below.

    Pixelmon Server Tips

    Choosing Your First Pokemon

Welcome to the world of Pixelmon! As you begin your journey among the many Pokemon that roam, you’ll be able to choose a starter. There are a total of 27 starters to select from ranging from Pokemon generations 1 through 9. Who will you pick as your first Pokemon? We felt some Scorbunny action was in order for the journey ahead! 🔥

How to Make Pokeballs in Pixelmon

To create more Pokeballs in Pixelmon, you’ll need to gather some resources first. This includes a:

    • Crafting table – created by placing 4 wooden blocks in a square in your inventory.
    • Furnace – made using 8 blocks of cobblestone in a circle on the crafting table.
    • 3x Apricorns of the same color – You can collect Apricorns from Apricorn bushes.
    • 3x Metal ore such as iron ore
    • Some stone blocks

Now, you’re ready to create the Pokeballs:

    1. Start by placing down the crafting table and furnace if you haven’t already.
    2. Then, in the furnace smelt the ore into metal/iron ingots until you have at least 3.
    3. Next, enter the crafting table and place 3 Apricorns across to make 5 Pokeball lids.
how to create lids for Pokeballs
    4. Repeat this for the metal/iron ingots to make 5 Pokeball bases.
      pokeball base crafting recipe
    5. You’ll also need to create a stone button, which can be made by placing 1 stone in a crafting table.
    6. After you have all of that, you can combine the lids, base, and button into a crafting table to create a Pokeball!

Having trouble making Pokeballs? In Pixelmon version 9.1.0, there is a confirmed bug where the recipes for Pokeballs are not working. To get around this, we recommend going to Pokeshops in towns/villages. If you have admin access, you can type the command /give <username> pixelmon:<pokeball type> <amount> to spawn in Pokeballs.

Healing Your Pokemon in Pixelmon Reforged

For all of your healing needs, no place is better than a Pokemon Center with Nurse Joy. Found throughout the Pixelmon world usually in towns and villages, Pokemon centers appear in different shapes and sizes. When you find one, inside you’ll find a Nurse Joy ready to heal your Pokemon, a PC to store Pokemon, and even a trading machine!

How to Spawn Pokemon in Pixelmon

Summoning Pokemon in Pixelmon allows you and your friends to get the perfect team for your adventures. This includes shiny and legendary Pokemon! To spawn Pokemon in your world, you can use the command /pokespawn <pokemon> [shiny]. The shiny variable is optional and determines if that Pokemon will spawn in shiny or not. Here are just a few of the wondrous Pokemon we spawned into our own Pixelmon server:

How to Locate a Village in Pixelmon

In Pixelmon, villages hold some of the most important buildings. These include Pokemon Centers, Pokeshops, and more. Therefore, finding those villages can be rather important. Thankfully, there is a command to locate villages in Pixelmon. Firstly, you’ll need to be an admin on your server. Once you are, you can type the command /locate village. Afterward, the chat will display the coordinates of the nearest village and you can teleport to it with teleport commands!

    Common Pixelmon Issues

I get “Saving World” when trying to join a Pixelmon server

This issue has been occurring for Pixelmon players for several years now and involves a minor bug with Minecraft launchers. When first loading Forge and the Pixelmon mod, sometimes the game sets your max frame rate to 0 resulting in the game refusing to load. To fix this issue, access your “Options” and then “Video Settings”. Find the “Max Framerate” option and increase this. We recommend 60 FPS or more. After making that change, press “Done” and then attempt to rejoin. You will now be able to join and play on your server!

Server is still starting! Please wait before reconnecting.

When you experience this error, it means that your server is still starting. Modded Minecraft servers will often take at least a few minutes to start fully and sometimes they can take even longer depending on other factors. These factors include your server’s available RAM, how many mods are installed, and how many worlds are loading.

As the error mentions, we recommend waiting a few minutes before attempting to connect again. If you’re still unable to join, you can check the “Live Server Console” of your server to see if it is still starting. One way to tell if your server has finished starting is if the worlds have been loaded. If you see messages like “Preparing spawn area”, you’ll know the world is or already has been loaded and you should then be able to join.

Failed to synchronize registry data from server, closing connection.

When you experience this message when trying to join a Pixelmon server, your game and the server do not have matching mods. This results in the game being unable to synchronize or link to the server. To fix this, we recommend checking the mods on both your game and the server.

Following the steps above, we showed how Pixelmon’s modpack installation for servers includes several additional mods. These mods will need to either be removed from the server or installed on your game. You can follow the last steps in the “How to Set Up a Pixelmon Server” section above to remove those mods.

Get them all on your Minecraft Server

Now you know how to bring the world of Pokémon to Minecraft, how will you start your adventure? Whether your goal is to catch them all or become a Pokemon master, you and your friends can do it together! Share your adventures with others, collect your favorite Pokemon, and take on the exciting journeys ahead on your Pixelmon Minecraft server!
