In Minecraft, players are taken through hundreds of unique worlds including modded worlds. Of those modded worlds, players can see everything from deadly dragons to volcano caves and even full overhauls of mobs. One such overhaul that brings back the childhoods of many players is the Pixelmon server mod for Minecraft, bringing Pokemon to the game!
The Pixelmon mod is no stranger to most Minecraft players, having been around since 2012. Becoming extremely popular in a short time, the Pixelmon mod continued to grow with more Pokemon and an ever-evolving community behind it. The original mod was discontinued in 2017 but shortly after, was then continued with Pixelmon Reforged and Pixelmon Generations. There are now 908 Pokemon in Pixelmon to discover, covering generations 1 through 8 and the gen 9 starters with updates continuing to come. Are you ready to catch them all with your friends and fellow Pixelmon trainers?
Pixelmon can take quite a few steps to install, leading to a complicated setup. To help break the installation down, we’ll show you each step from making a server to adding Pixelmon to your game. Afterward, you and your friends will be able to jump on your own Pixelmon server to enjoy the world of Pokemon!
If you already own a Minecraft server with us but need to switch to Pixelmon, you are able to do that for free! The process of changing to Pixelmon on your Minecraft server only takes a few steps and we’ll show you how to.
You can now start your Minecraft server to enjoy Pixelmon. Like other mods, Pixelmon will also need to be installed on your game to work. If you do not already have Pixelmon installed on your Minecraft game, you can follow the instructions below to install it!
When it comes to playing Pixelmon on your Minecraft game client, one of the easiest ways to set up and play the mod is on the CurseForge launcher. CurseForge can automatically install Pixelmon and keep it up-to-date. Then, when you are ready to play you can simply hit play on the Pixelmon Reforged modpack without any other extra installations or add-ons. You can install and use the CurseForge Launcher to play Pixelmon by using this guide!
Before you can install the Pixelmon Reforged mod manually, you’ll need Minecraft: Java Edition which supports Minecraft mods. Using the default launcher, we’ll be showing you how to add Forge to run mods and then how to install Pixelmon.
Alongside the Pixelmon Reforged mod, several side mods can also be downloaded and installed. These mods add everything from teams to better Pokedex, economies, money, and more. Side mods are installed just like how the Pixelmon mod was added above, however, you can also follow our our Minecraft mod guide to install them. Here are a few of the mods you can add for more Pixelmon server fun:
Welcome to the world of Pixelmon! As you begin your journey among the many Pokemon that roam, you’ll be able to choose a starter. There are a total of 27 starters to select from ranging from Pokemon generations 1 through 9. Who will you pick as your first Pokemon? We felt some Scorbunny action was in order for the journey ahead! 🔥
To create more Pokeballs in Pixelmon, you’ll need to gather some resources first. This includes a:
Now, you’re ready to create the Pokeballs:
Having trouble making Pokeballs? In Pixelmon version 9.1.0, there is a confirmed bug where the recipes for Pokeballs are not working. To get around this, we recommend going to Pokeshops in towns/villages. If you have admin access, you can type the command /give <username> pixelmon:<pokeball type> <amount> to spawn in Pokeballs.
For all of your healing needs, no place is better than a Pokemon Center with Nurse Joy. Found throughout the Pixelmon world usually in towns and villages, Pokemon centers appear in different shapes and sizes. When you find one, inside you’ll find a Nurse Joy ready to heal your Pokemon, a PC to store Pokemon, and even a trading machine!
Summoning Pokemon in Pixelmon allows you and your friends to get the perfect team for your adventures. This includes shiny and legendary Pokemon! To spawn Pokemon in your world, you can use the command /pokespawn <pokemon> [shiny]. The shiny variable is optional and determines if that Pokemon will spawn in shiny or not. Here are just a few of the wondrous Pokemon we spawned into our own Pixelmon server:
In Pixelmon, villages hold some of the most important buildings. These include Pokemon Centers, Pokeshops, and more. Therefore, finding those villages can be rather important. Thankfully, there is a command to locate villages in Pixelmon. Firstly, you’ll need to be an admin on your server. Once you are, you can type the command /locate village. Afterward, the chat will display the coordinates of the nearest village and you can teleport to it with teleport commands!
This issue has been occurring for Pixelmon players for several years now and involves a minor bug with Minecraft launchers. When first loading Forge and the Pixelmon mod, sometimes the game sets your max frame rate to 0 resulting in the game refusing to load. To fix this issue, access your “Options” and then “Video Settings”. Find the “Max Framerate” option and increase this. We recommend 60 FPS or more. After making that change, press “Done” and then attempt to rejoin. You will now be able to join and play on your server!
When you experience this error, it means that your server is still starting. Modded Minecraft servers will often take at least a few minutes to start fully and sometimes they can take even longer depending on other factors. These factors include your server’s available RAM, how many mods are installed, and how many worlds are loading.
As the error mentions, we recommend waiting a few minutes before attempting to connect again. If you’re still unable to join, you can check the “Live Server Console” of your server to see if it is still starting. One way to tell if your server has finished starting is if the worlds have been loaded. If you see messages like “Preparing spawn area”, you’ll know the world is or already has been loaded and you should then be able to join.
When you experience this message when trying to join a Pixelmon server, your game and the server do not have matching mods. This results in the game being unable to synchronize or link to the server. To fix this, we recommend checking the mods on both your game and the server.
Following the steps above, we showed how Pixelmon’s modpack installation for servers includes several additional mods. These mods will need to either be removed from the server or installed on your game. You can follow the last steps in the “How to Set Up a Pixelmon Server” section above to remove those mods.
Now you know how to bring the world of Pokémon to Minecraft, how will you start your adventure? Whether your goal is to catch them all or become a Pokemon master, you and your friends can do it together! Share your adventures with others, collect your favorite Pokemon, and take on the exciting journeys ahead on your Pixelmon Minecraft server!
