Prejudices about Female Gamers – Introduction

Over the years, the gaming industry has seen rapid growth with millions of players enjoying games worldwide. Unfortunately, in this community, female gamers face a lot of discrimination while gaming. While the number of women gamers has grown increasingly each year, many people still tend to have misconceptions about them. We’re here to help put these misconceptions to rest. For Women’s History month, we will explore some of the common prejudices about female gamers and the experiences that women face.

Women Only Play Casual Games

When it comes to gaming, one of the most common pervasive stereotypes about female gamers is that they only enjoy casual games. Games such as Candy Crush or Farmville. While it’s true that many women enjoy these games, women also enjoy a variety of other genres too including RPGs, shooters, strategy games, and more. Women of our teams at Nitrado, Apex, and MCProHosting have even shared their love of gaming and the genres they enjoy, which you can learn more about in our blog. The idea that women only play casual games is a stereotype that is simply not true, and in time, we hope that this becomes more understood across the world.

Women Play Games to Impress Men

A harmful and baseless prejudice against female gamers, the stereotype “women play games to impress men” is an unfortunately common one seen around the world. This prejudice ignores the fact that women can have a genuine interest in playing video games. Rather, many female gamers play for the same exact reasons as male gamers, from its entertainment to the challenges/quests in gaming, and social interaction with friends & others. For that reason, it’s important that we never stereotype women in this manner and appreciate that at the end of the day, we’re all just looking to have a good time while gaming!

Women are Bad at Video Games

Happening alongside online harassment, women often face the harmful misconception that people think women are bad at video games. This stereotype is not only entirely false but can be extremely harmful to women. Women are just as capable of playing video games as men and their skills should never be questioned due to their gender. Unfortunately, this stereotype still remains resulting in women facing criticism and ridicule from male players. It’s important that we push towards equal treatment and an understanding that regardless of your gender, you can be good at video games!

Doing Better to Prevent Prejudices about Female Gamers

Unfortunately, female gamers face a lot of online harassment, including sexist comments and even threats of violence. This kind of harassment is unacceptable and can be extremely distressing and discouraging for female gamers. It’s important to always remember that women are not these stereotypes and are just as capable as male gamers. Women can enjoy more than just casual games, will play games to enjoy themselves, and can be extremely skilled when it comes to gaming. With that in mind, together, all of us can work towards doing better for the women of gaming to ensure a safe and empowering environment!
